    3. Putting Clinic The Truth About Putting Putting accounts for more than ˝ of the shots taken during an 18 hole round. PGA Tour Pro’s average 25.6 putts per round. The average 10 handicap golfer averages between 30 and 32 putts per round. The average 20 handicap golfer averages more than 36 putts per round. Sum it all up… The most significant difference between good golfers and bad golfers is their ability to putt well. If you want to be a better player, become a better putter. Putting Basics Proper alignment Proper distance control Proper understanding of break (slope of green) Progressive acceleration of putter to target line with appropriate tempo Putting Drills Resistance drill: roll the ball to the target against the resistance of the band. Eyes closed lag drill: Hit the ball and find it with your eyes closed. Review of breaking putts: Work with the stimpmeter to establish target line awareness Putting contest

    4. Chipping & Pitching Chipping One Lever swing motion Generally more ground time than air time Slightly open stance relative to the target line Ball played off the right toe Shaft angled to the left thigh Descending angle of attack on the downswing. Little or no release on the follow-through Drills: - Right to left roll & throw drill - Two Shafted Hitting Drill - Right heel shaft & swing drill - Touch the rope drill Pitching Two lever swing motion with more wrist hinge and release than chip shot. Generally more air time than ground time. Slightly open stance relative to the target line Ball played more toward center of stance. Slightly less descending angle of attack than the chip shot. Drills Right hand toss / right hand hit drill Eyes forward drill (trust me drill) Grapefruit drill (small medicine ball) Soft landing exercise

    5. G.A.P. & B.P. The most important part of the golf swing occurs before the swing even starts Grip Your only connection to the club. Alignment “You cain’t hit it son if you ain’t aimin’ at it.” … West Virginian on Big Game Hunting Posture Primary Tilt & Secondary Tilt in the golf swing. Ball Position Building a consistent template for success. Pre Shot Routine A consistent pre shot routine will build each of the 4 pre swing components into a ritualized, repeatable, sequence. The key to a consistent swing is a consistent set up. The key to a consistent set up is a consistent pre shot routine. A Pre shot routine is as individual as a fingerprint. Get to know your pre shot routine and you’ll get to know your game. Practice does not make perfect… perfect practice makes perfect.

    6. The Full Swing Components of the swing Body Turn Shaft behind shoulders drill Russian Twist Wrist Hinge Split grip takeaway drill Long Shaft Set drill Set to shoulder drill Weight Transfer Right hand set & grab drill One hand toss drill with heavy ball Step and hit drill Release Toe of club into board drill Right turn Clyde hitting drill. What ties it all together? Rhythm Swing should have a pendulum type motion like a grandfather’s clock. Balance The key to a repeatable swing. Balanced finish to your left side on each swing. Sequential Delivery of Power. The key to effortless power is to deliver the club into impact in a specific sequence. Each Student review the Dynamics of Distance Disc.

    7. Sand Play Fundamentals of Sand Play Slightly open stance Ball position off left heel Hands soft, but slightly forward of center. Steep angle of attack on the takeaway. Trailing edge of the club strikes sand first creating “bounce” and lift for the ball. Sand acts as the medium for the club to create lift. Sand Play Drills Splash drill Take sand and “throw” it to the target. Pancake drill Make a pancake sized divot between two lines in the sand. Hold the quarter drill Make a partial finish while holding a quarter on the clubface. Figure “8” drill Take the club away outside the target line and drop it inside on the way through.

    8. Ball Flight Laws How many ways can a golf ball fly? “If you’ve seen me play, you’d know the answer is infinite.” is the answer I usually get. Actually, a golf ball can only fly 3 ways Straight Hook or Draw Slice or Fade It can also only begin in 3 possible flight paths Straight Left of Target Right of Target So, the answer to the question, How many ways can a golf ball fly? Is “9” By learning how to create different ball flights, we can also learn how to control them. Controlling Ball Flight: Aim your body where you want the ball to start Aim your clubface where you want the ball to finish Swing along the line of your body Allow your hands to enter the impact area in the neutral position relative to your body alignment. Visualize the intended flight Make sure to allow enough clearance in your initial set up. Choose less club for a draw Choose more club for a fade

    9. Tee Shots & Fairway Woods Probably the most practiced and emphasized shot in all of golf is the tee shot. Although its relative importance to the game as a whole is relatively small, it is the defining shot for most golfers. If they hit a straight, long, tee shot, they are generally perceived as an accomplished player. Tee Shot Tidbits… Tee shots account for only 14 strokes in an 18 hole round. Distance is significantly overrated when it comes to score. Most players try to HIT rather than SWING, which is the biggest killer of a good tee shot. Tee Shots / Fairway Woods Longer shaft produces flatter swing plane & a more shallow angle of attack. Excessively steep angle of attack is the biggest fault in tee shots & fairway woods for most average golfers. Work on: Level turn through impact Proper ball position & alignment. Proper path through impact.

    10. Situational Shots “Not every shot is a level lie” Truer words were never spoken about this game. Uneven lies are rarely practiced and almost never addressed in instructional situations. 5 basic lies Level Stance, ball even with feet. Uphill Downhill Ball above feet Ball below feet Let your balance be your guide Generally, your natural balance is the best tool to employ when dealing with uneven lies. When the ball is… Above your feet: Narrow stance Stand upright Choke up on the club Allow for a left ball flight Below your feet: Wider stance Stance shortened Hold club at full length Allow for a right ball flight Uphill Lie Take more club Ball back in stance Weight to uphill side of stance Downhill lie Take less club Ball to middle or front of stance Weight to uphill side of stance

    11. Course Management Course management mistakes Most average golfers try to be shot making hero’s. Attempt impossible shots Fail to see one shot ahead and plan for their next shot. Take too little club and swing too hard. Fail to acknowledge the value of a single stroke. Fail to acknowledge the importance of the short game. Play within yourself Know your abilities and play within them Plan one shot ahead on all shots If you’re going to play safe, play safe. Weigh the consequences of risky shots. Golf YOUR Ball When you play, it’s you & the course… that’s it… “Mastery of the game of golf is a reflection of the soul of the person” … Harvey Pennick
