Security guards can expect all kinds of unusual assignments. In addition to malls, casinos, construction sites and offices some might just be called upon to protect…well, the police department.
A recent article indicates Detroit is definitely taking this option as a solution for defending their own building while an under-staffed police department is out on patrol.
As amusing or ironic as it might seem to an outsider, this is not actually an unusual practice. The police are largely out and about in the city, and may only need a pair of watchful eyes to ensure that their headquarters goes unmolested.
A security guard in this circumstance is probably not expected to engage with trouble, but would be tasked with calling the police back immediately if something goes wrong.
The truth is that many criminals are opportunists. The presence of a trained, watchful professional is often the only deterrent that most need.
Still, it makes Michigan’s move to demand guard cards and training even more important, especially for the safety of the guards that might be tasked with guarding an empty police headquarters in the heart of Detroit.
While at first blush a lack of training requirements may seem like a wide-open opportunity for guards the truth is they make the job harder and more dangerous.
