  3. Workshop Objectives 1. Consider how project based learning can advance learning as it relates to the Common Core Standards 2. Identify and analyze the value and opportunities presented by developing a film production program 3. View and analyze sample projects 4. Provide ways to develop a film program

  4. Common Core Standards

  5. Table Discussion Consider how Project Based Learning can support the Common Core Standards and advance student learning and achievement.

  6. Six Moving Parts of the CCSS, by Thom Markham 1. Moving from instruction to inquiry. 2. Balancing knowledge and skills. 3. Going deep. 4. Teaching teamwork. 5. Establishing a culture of inquiry. 6. Blending coaching with teaching.

  7. Objectives a Film Program Meets • Engage students in their learning by fostering interest and challenge • Enable students to utilize technology in order to create content rather than be passive participants in the learning process. • Enable students to use the medium of film to create learning opportunities for their peers (eg: films that students create can teach content as well as entertain and schools can archive material for teacher use) • Teach students communication skills that are easily applicable across disciplines and in the real world • Film production teaches students to think critically and improve their writing, speaking, and listening skills. • Film production is about leadership in a community and teaches students to work collaboratively, problem solve, and think strategically • Effectively utilize the new Bloom and Kolb Cycle (from concrete experience to active experimentation)

  8. Think-Pair-Share As you view the projects, consider the following questions. 1. Identify examples of how projects address the objectives from the preceding slide. 2. Consider if and how the projects address Dr. Markham’s essential elements of the Common Core. After the viewing, you will discuss your responses in pairs at your table.

  9. Using the New Bloom’s Taxonomy Building on remembering and understanding technical information Engaging students in analyzing and evaluating during planning and implementation Enabling students to create

  10. Using Kolb’s Cycle Moving from concrete experience (watching, listening, reading) to active experimentation (creating a new film) Kolb Cycle of Experiential Learning

  11. Effectively use a digital video camera and accessories Understand how to storyboard Locate information, images, and clips from the Internet Use video editing software to edit video, sound, music, and add after (special) effects Cite sources correctly Create and speak about their multi-media project Technology Outcomes

  12. Creating a Public Service Announcement Task: As one group at your table, use the storyboard template to plan a 30 second film promoting the use of film production in school as a means to increase student depth of knowledge and is aligned to the Common Core Standards. Your plan should include 3 distinct scenes.

  13. What did you learn from this activity? What challenges did you face in brainstorming your PSA? Can you describe your activity in terms of the New Bloom’s or Kolb’s Cycle? Table Talk

  14. Stories of the American Experience: Interview with a Veteran Cyber Bullying: A PSA Foreign Language Film Festival Creative Writing for Film The Physics of Parkour Metaphorically Speaking North Central High School: The Documentary The Quiz Show 30 Minutes: Our Local School Newsmagazine Turn and Talk: Consider and share project ideas that you would implement in your schools and districts. Keep in mind projects that require deep understanding require an essential question that challenges students to utilize the tools of inquiry and enable them to explore “big ideas.” Project Ideas

  15. Closing Task Identify one to three steps you will take at your school to implement a film program or film support program.
