General information • Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and hosts its headquarters (Brussels also our capital city). • Belgium covers an area of 30.528 km or 11.787 miles. • Belgium we have 3 official languages. Dutch, French and German. • The 2 largest groups are the Flemish (Dutch speaking) and the Walloons (French speaking).

  3. Communities and regions • Orange: = Flemish community (Dutch speaking). • Orange+ red = Flemish and French area. • Red = French community (French speaking). • Green = Germans speaking community.

  4. Orange: Flemish Region = Dutch speaking area. • Blue: Brussels-Capital Region = French and Dutch speaking area. • Red: Walloon Region = French and German language areas.

  8. Climate • Belgium has a maritime temperature or an oceanic climate. • Climates near the oceans have moderately cool summers and warm winters.

  10. School is compulsory from the age of 6 until the age of 18. • Nursery school starts from the age of 2,5 until 6 years old. (foundation 1, 2 and 3). • Primary school starts from the age of 6 until the age of 12. (Year 1 to 6) • Secondary school starts from the age of 12 until the age of 18.

  11. Food Beer Chocolate Probably one of our most famous products is Belgian chocolate. When visiting Bruges you’ll find a lot of small shops making chocolate by hand with original tools. These pralines are often tiny pieces of art and you’ll have to pay for them accordingly. • With approximately 125 breweries and 500 standard kinds of Belgian beer we offer one of the most diverse national collections of quality Beer in the world.

  12. What little people know is that French fries are actually from Belgium. The name comes from “frenched” which means “thinly sliced”. When British and American soldiers tasted them in Belgium during World War I, they called them “French” as this was the official language of the Belgian army at that time, and “fries” as they are fried when preparing them. • Waffles come in all tastes and shapes. Among the most famous are the Brussels waffle and the Liège Waffle.

  16. Cycling Cyclo - cross Cycling Eddy Merckx, is a Belgian former professional cyclist. The American publication, VeloNews, called him the greatest and most successful cyclist of all time.[3] He won the Tour de France five times, won all the classics except Paris-Tours,[2] won the Giro d'Italia five times and the Vuelta a España, won the world championship as an amateur and a professional, and broke the world hour record.
