  11. ProfessionHospital Medical Lab Departments • Accessioning: Specimen Collection (phlebotomy) & Processing • Hematology • Chemistry • Histology/Anatomic Pathology • Microbiology • Transfusion Medicine

  12. PHLEBOTOMY(BLOOD COLLECTION) • Venous: blood collected from veins using needles, syringes, specimen tubes • Capillary: finger/heel poke samples

  13. HEMATOLOGY • Hematology = the study of blood cells • 5 types of White Blood Cells = body’s defense against infections (bacterial/viral/fungal) • Red Blood Cells = carry Oxygen to tissues • Platelets = tiny cells essential for clotting

  14. Chemistry • Blood, urine, cerebral spinal fluid, & other body fluids are analyzed for chemical levels • Thousands of chemical substances measured: Glucose (blood sugar), electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, HCO3), hormones, enzymes (cardiac/liver/pancreas…), proteins, drugs of abuse…

  15. Histology: Anatomic Pathology Lumps, bumps, biopsies: • Tissue sent to lab to be processed, sliced one cell thick, & stained by MLTs • Tissue slides are analyzed for disease (i.e. cancer) by pathologists

  16. Microbiology • Culture (grow) bacteria from infections: urine, blood, cerebral spinal fluid (meningitis), wounds, sputum (pneumonia)… • Identify bacteria, fungi, parasites • Test bacteria for sensitivity to antibiotics

  17. Transfusion Medicine • Determine blood group (A, B, AB, O) & type (Rh pos/neg) • Crossmatch blood and blood products for patients requiring transfusions • Products transfused: blood, plasma, platelets, albumin, cryoprecipitate, blood clotting factors (VIII = hemophilia)

  18. Where MLTs Work • hospitals, private & public medical laboratories, community health care clinics, research laboratories, forensic laboratories, & veterinary clinics. • Excellent job prospects & projections of increasing job vacancies for MLTs in Canada.

  19. Professional Role of MLTs • Key member of the diagnostic team, MLTs performs sophisticated laboratory testing that provides critical information used by physicians to diagnose & treat illness, and to maintain their patient’s health. • MLTs conduct laboratory tests on blood, body fluids and tissues, and interpret the results.

  20. MLT PROFESSION • On top 20 list of best jobs • 2.5 year program = $26/hour to start (BC hospital wage) • Interesting & challenging work • Work independently, but as part of the health care team • Excellent job prospects • National certification CSMLS National Exams are written after the program has been completed = qualified to work across Canada

  21. MLT Profession If you enjoy: • independent, detailed work • problem solving • the medical & science field • challenging work • producing quality results And you can clearly differentiate colours + posses physical stamina + manual dexterity then Medical Laboratory Technology could be the profession for you!
