1. Lesson Package on Generosity • School Character Development Programme • One Value Per Week • Lesson conducted daily during Class Family Time (first period Mon, Tues, Thurs and last period on Fri. Wed – assembly) • Class size : 15 – 20 • Buddy and Group • Low – Middle Ability Students

Observations as lesson was conducted: • Students were able to come up with their own interpretations of why this image of a hand holding a seedling was used in this slide • “loving hands”, plant means to “grow with care”, soil has nutrients to help plant become bigger, like people giving help in terms of money/labour etc, hands are cupping plant gently, not in a fist-grip

Observations as lesson was conducted: • Students were able to come up with their own interpretations of why this image of 2 persons giving presents to one another was used in this slide • “giving big presents, not small ones”, exchanging gifts to please one another

Observations as lesson was conducted: • After the presentation of slides and student’s responses on what generosity is, the next task is for pairwork discussion on what generosity is in relation to self, family and friends • “help my mother with housework when she is tired even when I want to play computer game”, “lending money to friend to eat when she did not have enough/forgot to bring”, “look around to help, teacher carry books, throw rubbish in class”, “Father buys things for us” 3bi. explain what generosity is in relation to self, family or school to one another clearly enough for one another

Observations as lesson was conducted: • After the pairwork discussion and presentation to share with the class, the next task is to form into groups, members will select from given scenarios that scene that depicts an act of generosity, and determine in what way is generosity being shown. A representative from each group will share with the class • “ 3ci. discuss and choose from a given set of teacher-prepared scenarios the scene that demonstrates generosity, and write their explanations on why the scenario demonstrates generosity

9. Generosity Being generousmeans kind, caring, helpful, giving, bighearted, openhanded, charitable Sim Ah Leng, 46 He was a fruit seller living a simple life. He suffered red eyes with black spots. He had an eye operation 20 years ago and thought it was fine. But then he would be blind without a cornea transplant. He had to see the doctor once every 2 weeks. His family was worried for him, he was afraid. What would he do if he became blind? He was told to wait for 3 years for a cornea transplant. Thanks to someone, he only waited for 3 months. After the transplant, he can see and is thankful for little things in life. Responsibility Meaning =answerable, dependable, accountable, reasonable and able to make good judgment so that you can be trusted to do the right thing Jan Philip, 21, a Swedish student, and Eng Kai Er, 24, a Singapore university student, appeared nude at Holland Village at 11pm on 24Jan09. Both may be finedup to $2,000 and/or jailed for up to 3 months. They will be back in court on April 30. Eng is a 2007 A*Star National Science scholar (NSS) studying for her PhD in infection biology in Sweden. She is also a former student of Hwa Chong Institution and studied in Cambridge university in 2003.

Observations as lesson was conducted: • During discussions, students were able to use words related to values to link with what they interpret from the scenarios, to identify the correct scenarios that has the value “generosity” instead of the other values “diligence”, “honesty”, “innovation” etc and provide explanations (orally) • “the scenario of the man who was given a cornea transplant shows the giver’s generosity, for giving up his personal organs to save others. Since he is dead, cannot see, help others to see as they are still alive, thinks of others even when he is gone” 3ci. discuss and choose from a given set of teacher-prepared scenarios the scene that demonstrates generosity, and write their explanations on why the scenario demonstrates generosity 3di. students contribute to class discussion by giving appropriate responses on the different values presented in the set of scenarios, able to compare and differentiate among the values and explain to the class
