  2. ORGANIZATION & PLANNING • Figure out how to break up large time periods • WHAT WAS IT LIKE AT THE BEGINNING? (essential) • MIDDLE? • END? (essential) • Start at the beginning in each paragraph!!! Don’t start with the change…describe what went on first, then the change… it will help with analysis as to why it changed

  3. THESIS (1) • Address the entire time period • Have at least ONE continuity and at least ONE change (but try to have 2 of one) • It should have an overall statement of analysis (the “so what”? Is stated) • Hard to write a good thesis in one sentence – so writing two sentences for your thesis is fine.

  4. ADDRESSES ALL PARTS (2) • You must discuss both change and continuity • They should be in separate paragraphs UNLESS there is one continuity that also has a change…however, I’d transition that into a second paragraph

  5. APPROPRIATE HISTORICAL EVIDENCE (2) • You must cite specific examples of both change and continuity • This is where your knowledge of history is important and you can explain the change and continuity over long periods

  6. RELEVANT WORLD CONTEXT (1) • Change does not happen in a vacuum – it often involves more that just one region or country • Place the change in a larger context and identify global events that bring change – or how continuities persist despite global changes • “ Despite the changes in labor brought by the Industrial Revolution, slavery of Africans continued in certain parts of the Americas up through the end of the 19th century”

  7. ANALYZE THE PROCESS OF CHANGE AND CONTINUITY (1) • It is not enough to just say that something has changed – you must state WHY it changed and how it impacts those in a particular region. • You must also state WHY continuities persist.
