  1. The Sheffield Hallam University Geogebra Institute

  2. People of the Sheffield Hallam University GeoGebra Institute • Professor Hilary Povey Hilary is Professor of Mathematics Education in the Mathematics Education Centre (MEC). She will support the development of workshops for teachers and of curriculum materials for schools and HE. She will explore possibilities of conducting GeoGebra related research, particularly school-based action research associated with accreditation at Masters and/or doctoral level. • Dr Mark Dabbs (Chair)Mark is a Senior Lecturer in the Mathematics Education Centre (MEC). He will develop materials that use GeoGebra to illustrate concepts in mathematics and to enrich students’ engagement with the HE mathematics education curriculum. He will also assist colleagues in developing their own materials using GeoGebra and will aim to widen the GeoGebra user community by developing and maintaining a local GeoGebra website. He will also aim to establish an annual conference at Sheffield Hallam University dedicated to the usage of free mathematical software in which GeoGebra will play a central role.

  3. People of the Sheffield Hallam University GeoGebra Institute • SueElliottSue is a Principal Lecturer in the Mathematics Education Centre (MEC). Sue will support workshops for teachers and the development of curriculum materials for schools and HE. • Dr Neil Challis, Dr Harry Gretton and Dr Jeff WaldockNeil is Head of Mathematics, and Jeff and Harry are Principal Lecturers in the Department of Mathematics (SHUMaths). They will develop materials that use GeoGebra to illustrate concepts in mathematics and to enrich students’ engagement with the HE mathematics curriculum. They will also assist colleagues in developing their own materials using GeoGebra and will aim to widen the GeoGebra user community by disseminating the results at suitable events and through our local GeoGebra website.

  4. Activities and Goals of the Sheffield Hallam University GeoGebra Institute • Training and SupportThe GeoGebra Institute of Sheffield will offer professional development opportunities for local teachers. These will be workshops for teachers in the use of the software for teaching mathematics in secondary schools. The cost of these courses will be covered by the schools. It will continue to engage initial secondary mathematics teacher education students in the use of the software both for their own mathematical development and in their practice teaching. It will offer support in the form of relevant curriculum materials.

  5. Activities and Goals of the Sheffield Hallam University GeoGebra Institute • Development and SharingThe Sheffield GeoGebra Institute will actively develop materials both for classroom use in school and for use in higher education institutions. It is envisaged that these materials will be used to help students interactively explore topics in mathematics and will act as conversation pieces to stimulate discussions with peers and with tutors. These materials will be shared with users via a dedicated website (as well as on the GeoGebra site) which it is hoped will help form a community of practice within the region in the use of GeoGebra.

  6. Activities and Goals of the Sheffield Hallam University GeoGebra Institute • Research and CollaborationThe Institute will seek collaboration with the other HE colleagues in the region. We will explore the possibilities for HE related workshops. We will explore the possibility of offering Masters level accreditation for a GeoGebra related module based on action research in schools and seek finding for a part-time doctoral bursary. We will encourage such research students to present at BSRLM and to play an active part in the Institute.

  7. Activities and Goals of the Sheffield Hallam University GeoGebra Institute • CertificationWe do not envisage offering certification initially. This decision will be reviewed at the end of the first year. In the meantime, the possibility of certification will be canvassed with participating teachers.
