  1. Information Management at theVirginia Coast ReserveLong-Term Ecological Research Project John Porter jporter@LTERNET.edu

  2. VCR/LTER • The Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research Project studies the ecology of the barrier-island/lagoon ecosystem of the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula

  3. Researchers • The research team includes 25 investigators • Located at 7 different universities, and 2 government agencies • In 4 different states • The Anheuser-Busch Coastal Research Center in Oyster, VA provides facilities on the site.

  4. Goals of Information Management The goals of the VCR/LTER Information management are to: • Make possible new scientific discoveries, through the use and re-use of data • Help with the efficient management of the VCR/LTER project

  5. Environmental Data General Site Data (e.g., Met., Tides) Biodiversity Data from long-term experiments Investigator collected data GIS data layers Models Time series of images Researcher Directory Electronic documents Proposals Research Summaries Theses & Dissertations Publications Electronic Calendars Satellite Imagery Types of Information Available

  6. We have a local version of our data catalog

  7. Metadata, with links to download data and statistical analysis programs

  8. The Metadata includes a list of locations, and a link to an application running in Taiwan

  9. The program in Taiwan uses EML-standard Metadata to produce a map of research locations

  10. VCR/LTER data can also be accessed using a Metacat server, which uses EML Metadata

  11. Display of metadata in the Metacat is standard for all LTER sites, and for other groups that also use EML

  12. VCR/LTER - Milestones • 1990- GIS Lab Established • 1990 - Data Management Policy • 1992 - Electronic Mail Calendar • 1992 - Gopher Information Server • 1993 - WWW Server • 1994 - Online Research Summaries • 1995 - Web-based Personnel Directory • 1996 - Automated System for Research Summaries • 1996 - Biodiversity Database • 1997 - Web form-based Information Management Tools • 1999 - Automated Statistical Programs • 2000 – EML 1.4 Metadata • 2002 – Wireless Internet connection to island field site • 2004 – EML 2.1 Metadata • 2006 – PTAH translators

  13. Common, Open Source, Software is Used • Web Server – Apache • PHP • Databases • MYSQL (new applications) • Msql – Mini-SQL (Legacy applications) • Content Management Systems – PostNuke, Drupal

  14. Some Projects • Main VCR/LTER web page • http://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu • EcoCam webcam database • http://ecocam.evsc.virginia.edu • Advanced GIS web page • http://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/~jhp7e/advgis • Data graphing on command • http://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/~wwwczar/runplot.html

  15. Some Examples of “Special Purpose” web pages used by the VCR/LTER

  16. The ABCRC site management page helps coordinate research activities. It provides forms for requesting housing, boat and laboratory space.

  17. Some pages are used to facilitate management of data

  18. Other pages are used to facilitate communication among researchers. Each researcher can add their own content through forums, blogs and calendar entries
