  1. Train Yourself to be Godly An 8-week Spiritual Fitness Class Strength Endurance Flexibility

  2. Good job!!

  3. Which is heavier, a pound of steel or a pound of cotton? Which takes up more space, a pound of steel or a pound of cotton?

  4. Training Tip BMI– Body Mass Index Uses height and weight to give a broad indication of health. Body composition tells how much of our body is steel and how much is cotton!  SMI—Soul Mass Index Gives an indication of how much of our soul is ready for eternity and how much is tied up with the temporal.

  5. Simplicity The discipline of Simplicity helps our SMI because it reduces the spiritual weight that is holding us back from maturing. Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1

  6. Simplicity= Desiring ONE thing. Staying focused on ONE thing. So the question to answer is: “What is my one thing?”

  7. Defining our Limits: We have limited TIME. Do as MUCH as you can! “Bucket List” We end up with NOTHING. “Eat, drink, and be merry. Tomorrow we die!”

  8. Defining our Limits: We will give an ACCOUNT for the time and possessions we had. So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Rom.14:12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. I Corinthians 3:12 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives. II Peter 3:10-11

  9. Defining our Limits: We have limited TIME. We end up with NOTHING. We will give an ACCOUNT for the time and possessions we had. So how does this help us find our 1 desire and stay focused on 1 thing?

  10. He doesn’t know this is Jesus’ last time passing through Jericho. He has limited time. He doesn’t know Jerusalem will be destroyed in 40 years and everything will be taken from him and his children. He will end up with nothing.

  11. What’s in YOUR wallet?!

  12. Keep The Commandments • Do not murder. • Do not commit adultery. • Do not steal. • Do not give false testimony. • Do not defraud. • Honor your father and mother. • Love your neighbor as yourself.

  13. Money masquerades as a neutral agent, when in actuality it is consistently mentioned in Scripture as one of the Top 3 most dangerous influences on our spiritual well-being.

  14. “There’s nothing wrong with money, it’s what a person does with it that matters.” Two things wrong with that statement. It’s a rebuttal to an unspoken argument. It presents money as a Neutral agent in Theory.

  15. Having LOTS OF money/possessions is one of the most hazardous materials to one’s spiritual well-being and very few people remain unscathed by its effects.

  16. “One thingyou lack…” What was the ONE thing the man did not have? JESUS. What did he have to give up in order to have that One Thing? Everything else.

  17. How would this help his soul? He could experience thankfulness in a new way. (each provision was a gift) He could be free from the concern for possessions because all he had was available to others. He could develop a spirit of trust. (If he had Jesus, everything else would be provided. Psalm 23)

  18. Simplicity= Desiring Jesus. Staying focused on His Kingdom. “Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

  19. What is god? Sensual Material Clutter mind. Western Meditation

  20. In order to do this, I must be CONTENT. I have learned to becontent in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and goinghungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. Philippians 4:11-12 It wasn’t about the Amount—it was about being free to use anyamount for one thing.

  21. Practical Applications for Simplicity • Evaluate Level of Contentment • What is on your wish list that you want to have more money for? • Do you find yourself buying things you hadn’t thought to buy, just because they are on sale? • What catalogs or stores cultivate an “I want” in you, and how can you counter that? • Do you find yourself frustrated or irritated when you have only “enough” to get by?

  22. Practical Applications for Simplicity • 2. Evaluate Response to Loss. • How do you respond when… • Things unexpectedly break, or break just after the warranty expires? • There are unexpected expenses? (ex: medical, fees) • Bills are more because of weather conditions? • You are presented with an unanticipated opportunity to give? • You have more hospitality opportunities than usual, costing more than anticipated? • A celebration took more than anticipated? (trip, taking others out to eat, etc.) • Your spouse chooses to spend money on something unanticipated?

  23. Practical Applications for Simplicity • 3. Take steps to Implement Simplicity • De-clutter. Get rid of Stuff! • Take an inventory of what is in your closet. • Choose not to look at catalogs or go to certain stores. • Enjoy without “wanting” to have. • For one week, buy only essential food items for that week. • For one week, fix the same meal each night for dinner; with thankfulness! • Streamline time investments to essential relationships. If I got only one thing done today…

  24. What is your SMI? You have limited TIME. You end up with NOTHING. You will give an ACCOUNT for the time and possessions you had. How much of your soul is ready for eternity and how much is tied up with the temporal?
