Muslim/Islamic Culture • Base their faith on the Qur’an and Allah. • Base faith on their prophet Muhammad. • Two major sects of Muslim • Sunni – Majority of Muslims in the world • Shiite – Rule Iran and have presence in Iraq and Syria • Wahhabism – Strict interpretation of Islam. Osama Bin Laden claimed this sect • On average there are around 1.2 billion followers or 23% of the earth’s population • Second largest religion in the world

  3. Muslim/Islamic Culture • Family is the basic unit of Islam society • Man is responsible for the care of his family • Marriage is a contract • According to the Qur’an a man is able to take up to four wives • Hijab requires both men and women to dress and behave modestly

  4. Jihad • Means struggle • Technically it means “to struggle in the way of Allah” • Two commonly accepted meanings of jihad • “Greater Jihad” = An inner struggle to fulfill their religious duties • “Lesser Jihad” = Physical struggle against enemies of Islam

  5. Terrorism • Groups of Muslims believe that terrorism is an ideal form of jihad • Not all Muslims believe in this theory! • Types of Terrorism • Suicide attacks – the suicide bombers are considered “martyrs” • Hijackings • Kidnappings and executions • Internet recruiting

  6. Key Organizations • Egyptian Islamic Jihad – Main goal is to replace current Egyptian gov’t with an Islamic State. Founded in late 1970’s. • Islamic Resistance Movement – Organized from the Muslim Brotherhood. Loosely organized and known for its suicide bombers. • Al Qaeda – Created by Osama Bin Laden. Main goal is to reestablish the Muslim State. Extremely anti-Israeli and anti-American • Muslim Brotherhood – Founded in 1928. Originally base in Egypt. Attempted assassinations on several leaders.

  7. Notable Terrorist Attacks • 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombing -- 305 killed, 75 wounded • 1993 Bombay Bombings – 250 killed, 700 wounded • September 11th Attacks – 2,977 killed, over 6,000 injured • 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings – 3 killed, 264 wounded, leaving at least 14 as amputees.

Causalities in Iraq/Afghanistan Iraq Afghanistan 3,341 deaths 2010 being the deadliest year with 710 deaths Ages 18-21: 672 causalities 241 deaths in California Ohio being 7th in war causalities with 85 deaths • 4,802 deaths • Year 2007 being the deadliest at 962 • Ages 18-21: 1,352 causalities • 481 deaths in California • Ohio being 6th for war causalities with 187 deaths
