  1. The Scientific Method Ms. Twardowski Central Middle School 8 Tan

  2. What is it????? The search for cause & effect relationships in nature The way ALL scientists study the world

  3. WHY is it necessary??? • It makes all scientists organize their facts and findings in the same order. This makes it easier for them to understand their experiments and easier for others to read, too! • How would you feel if you were trying to find a cure for cancer and all the past experiments you read about were sloppy, hard to read, and all in a different order?

  4. Let’s Break it down….. • Step 1: Purpose • Ask a question or make an observation • Example: What would happen if I had two plants and I gave one 8 hours of sunlight a day, and the other one I gave 4 hours of sunlight a day? I wonder how this would affect their growth?

  5. Let’s Break it down….. • Step 2: Research • Go to the library or Internet to find out what types of experiments have ALREADY been done about this subject! What did the research say?

  6. Let’s Break it down….. • Step 3: • Hypothesis (Educated guess/Prediction) • Why do you think it is happening; OR, going to happen? • Example: I think the plant that receives more sunlight will grow faster.

  7. Let’s Break it down….. • Step 4: • Experiment • Test your hypothesis. • Conduct your experiment. • Construct data tables and graphs.

  8. Step 5:AnalysisLook at your tables and graphs and answer questions about the data.P.S. – What is wrong with this graph??

  9. Step 6: Conclusion Was your hypothesis correct? If yes, you’re done! Report your results! If no, REWRITE your hypothesis and conduct the experiment again!

  10. Plant Growth • If we were measuring the growth rate of two plants, one under full sunlight for 8 hours a day and the other one under full sunlight for 4 hours a day… • What would be the independent variable (x-axis)? • What would be the dependent variable (y-axis)?
