Ontario Colleges and Universities • Applications to Ontario Colleges are processed through the Ontario College Application Service ( OCAS) • www.ontariocolleges.ca • Applications to Ontario universities are processed centrally through the Ontario University Application Center (OUAC) • www.ouac.on.ca • Students applying to Ontario colleges and/or Ontario universities will complete one application even if they select numerous institutions and/or programs. The College and University applications are separate and independent of each other • All demographic and transcript information will be downloaded to OUAC and OCAS by the board • After the student has verified their intention to apply to OCAS, there will be a on-line session to create their account and password • For university applications, OUAC will generate an account and PIN number to access their account

College: Types of Programs • Certificate Programs require the completion of two semesters (or one year) of study • Diploma Programs (regular) require the completion of four semesters (or two years) of study. An advanced diploma is granted after three years • Applied Degree Programs Four-year applied academic programs offer the experience gained in practice and insight found with the help of theory • Collaborative & Joint Degree Programs offer the combination of hands-on learning with the theoretical approach of university studies • Graduate Certificate Programs require a university degree or a college certificate or diploma for admission.

  5. College: Types of Programs • Apprenticeship Programs An apprenticeship is a form of job training that enables you to learn by doing. As an apprentice you work under the supervision of a person skilled in the job you wish to learn. That individual teaches you how to do the work. As part of all apprenticeships, there is an in-school educational component. This educational component is provided at one of the colleges in Ontario.

High School Enrolment by graduating from grade 8 Working towards graduation by completing OSSD requirements No specialization of OSSD other than certification specialization ( IB, Gifted, FI, EF, SHSM etc) School year Sept to June University Acceptance based on grade 12 marks and earning the OSSD Working towards graduation by completing program requirements to undergraduate degree Program Specialization School year Sept to May 411 on University

  11. Choosing an Undergraduate Program • University academic programs are organized into Faculties and then further organized into departments or Majors. Please note all universities do not name their faculties the same or organize the departments under the same faculties. Common groupings for Faculties include Engineering, Humanities, Business, Arts, Health Sciences etc.

University and Program resources • University Fairs These events brings together many institutions together at one time where the university will make a presentation and have representatives from different Faculties on hand to answer questions. There are the Atlantic University Fairs, Quebec University fair, US University Fair, BC University Fair, and the Ontario University Fair usually in October to November

University and Program resources • University Liaison Representative School Visits Check for the University and College Representative Visit schedule available in September • University Campus Visits Each campus has its own unique style and a visit to the site is important to know whether you will like to be there for the next 4 years

Timelines, Deadlines and Responsibilities • Record and check all important University and College dates in your agenda or electronic device • Record and check all scholarship deadline dates; research and prepare applications pre-September • Check that you have the course prerequisites to the university or college program • Check that you will complete the OSSD requirements for graduation by June 2012 • If applying to out-of-country post-secondary institutions, see your guidance counselor ASAP to check if there are additional requirements such as reference letters and Scholastic Aptitude Tests that need to be completed as well as when is the application deadline
