  2. In any circumstance… • All plans must cover preventative care! • Insurers can’t: • - charge you anything for preventative care • drop you or charge you more in premiums if you’re sick • limit how much care you can get in a year or lifetime.* • spend less than 85% of their $ on healthcare!

  3. In any circumstance… • You will never have to spend over $5,000 (single) or $10,000 (family) annually out-of-pocket on healthcare. • Your taxes won’t rise to pay for bill unless you make over $500,000 (single) or $1,000,000 (together with spouse).

  4. In any circumstance… • Your employer must play or pay if their payroll is at least $500,000/yr! • must give you a healthcare plan and cover 72.5% (single plan) or 65% (family plan) of premiums • OR • must pay government 2 to 8% of their payroll

  5. You can stay on your parent’s plan until age 27. • Insurers can’t: • charge you more for the same coverage as men • drop your coverage or raise your rates because you’ve been pregnant, had c-section, or abused

  6. If you have good healthcare benefits negotiated through your union… • You can keep your doctor and your plan. • Your premiums should stop increasing so fast, because 36 million uninsured will get health insurance. • $1,017: what insured family spends a year for uninsured care on average • $368: what insured individual pays • Should cost your employer less to continue providing those benefits

Through “The Exchange,” you can buy a private plan… • will have to compete with “public option” • you’ll join others in larger pool = more bargaining power • Or you can get the “public option.” • covers private doctors and hospitals • you pay for it

  10. If you have trouble getting healthcare… • You’ll get help to pay for your healthcare costs. • doesn’t matter whether you get insurance on your own or from employer* • employer doesn’t make more than • can’t make more than 400% of the federal poverty line • can’t be on Medicaid or Medicare

  12. If you really struggle to pay the bills… • You can get Medicaid if you don’t make more than 150% of federal poverty line. For 2009… • - $16,245 as an individual • - $21,855 as a family of 2 • - $27,465 as a family of 3 • - $33,075 as a family of 4 • - $38,685 as a family of 5 • - $44,295 as a family of 6
