  3. Mission Statement • To provide each student a diverse education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation, and excellence in learning. Modified from Mountain Gap Middle School , Huntsville, AL

  4. Faculty • 30 teachers – all highly qualified • 10 Vocational, 20 Regular • 18 female, 15 White, 3 African American • 12 male, 8 White, 4 African American • 1 Librarian and 1 Library aide • Female, White

  5. Student Body • Middle to lower socio-economic status • 585 students • 52% Female • 48% Male • 43% Free or Reduced Lunch

Library’s Mission Statement • To be a student-centered library media center and a diverse resource available to all I Have a Dream students, providing a wide variety of reference materials, literature, and computer facilities for all students and faculty to fully utilize and enjoy.  The goal of the library is to ensure that students graduate with the information literacy skills necessary to be successful, productive, and socially responsible individuals. Culture Shock’s Next Step • ESL II.S.5 Develop an understanding of and respect for diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions and social roles. • ESL II.R.1 The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation and analysis.

  14. What’s our future goals? • To culturally diversify the print resources • Modify existing facility to accommodate changed collection • Hire one (1) new aide • Purchase new technology to handle diversification • Provide culturally diverse programs

  15. To culturally diversify the print resources • Purchase an additional 10 magazines that are more diverse (1 – 2 years) • Buy audio books and foreign language books (2 - 3 years) • Increase selection of culturally diverse materials in the fiction collection (spread over all 5 years)

  16. Modify existing facility to accommodate changed collection • Rearrange materials to accommodate new resources • 1 – 2 years • Add a room for audio and foreign language books • 2 – 3 years • Add a new office for aide and a new listening room • 4 – 5 years

Benefits • Will be hired only after librarian and aide attend diversity training seminars • Seminar in year one regarding how to hire and train • Seminar in year three regarding motivating and evaluating • Then in year 4 or 5 hire someone who is: • Fluent in at least two languages other than English • Has proven abilities to work well with those in ESL programs • Can assist in the selection of appropriate and timely resources for multiple cultures

  20. Purchase new technology to handle diversification • Purchase ten (10) Kindle’s • (4-5 years) Add three (3) library computers dedicated to use of ESL student needs (2-3 years) Purchase translation dictionaries for all in house computers (1-2 years)

  21. Provide culturally diverse programs • Include translations of Newsletters (1-2 years) • Use Audio and E-books to market the library program to all students (2-3 years) • Have students to review the foreign language books also (4-5 years)

Evaluation – Did we make it? • Collection will be analyzed annually by Titlewave to check for diversification, age data, and use. • Facility – Were we able to make modifications? • Staff - Did we hire a new aide? • Technology – Were purchases made within timeline? • Programming – Did programming change to incorporate diversity resources?
