  1. Egypt…….The Communist Country By: Destinie Keyes & Messiha Inman

  2. Background • After WWII the world was divided in two, east and west, this was the beginning of the Cold War. • Egypt fell under the influence of Soviet Union. Gamel was part of the Free Officers Movement. They perform a coup on July 23, 1952.

  3. Nasser • Nasser was determined to end western power in Egypt. In 1956, he nationalized the Suez canal ending British control. He believed in Pan-Arabism, which means all Arabian countries would come together to fight the U.S & European powers. • Under Nasser leadership Egypt took part in two wars against the Jewish state of Israel, a country which the U.S funded.

  4. Suez Crisis In 1956 the Suez canal became the focus of a major world conflict. The canal represents the only direct means of travel from the mediterranean to the indian ocean, which is important for all the countries in the world. However Great Britain and France wanted to control this for himself. Nasser however believed he should control it since its closer to Egypt.

  5. Suez Canal This caused a conflict with Egypt. Great Britain France and Israel attacked Egypt and took out their army easily and controlled the area for ten days. S.U threaten to use force to “restore order in the region”. The U.S told Great Britain and France to back down. Eventually the U.N got involved. The european powers backed down and Egypt had control of the region. This would however caused further problems between Israel and Egypt.

  6. Aswan Dam • It controlled the flow of the Nile River and provided two million acres of additional farmland. However, it also increased the saltiness of the Nile and caused the soil of the Nile Delta to erode.

  7. Allies • Syria • Jordan • Saudi Arabia • Soviet Union( they sided with S.U because the U.S stop funding the Aswan dam

  8. Foes • Israel • U.S • Britain

  9. Successors • Anwar Sadat encouraged foreign investment as well as free market practices. Sadat was assassinated in 1981. Sadat successor, Hosni Mubarak, faced economic problems and a rising population. He also faced criticism from Islamic fundamentalists.
