  2. What is Shingles? • Shingles is a viral infection • It can occur anywhere in the body, but it usually occurs on the left OR the right side of your torso

  3. More about the Shingles Virus • Shingles is caused by a virus known as varicella-zoster, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox • If you have had chicken pox, then the Shingles virus is inactive in your body in nerve tissue near the spinal cord or brain • Though the virus is not life-threatening, people who have had it say that it is very painful

  4. Symptoms of Shingles • Pain, burning, numbness or tingling at the site • Pain, followed by a red rash • Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over, falling off in two to three weeks • Itching

  5. Symptoms (cont.) Other people have experienced these symptoms along with the main ones: • Fever and chills • General aches • Headaches • Fatigue

  6. Treatments There are not any cures for Shingles, but you can take the following medications for reducing symptoms and healing up the outbreak faster: • Acyclovir • Valacyclovir • Famciclovir

  7. Treatments (Cont.) Shingles also causes serve pain. To relieve the pain, your doctor can prescribe: • Medications that contain narcotics (codeine) • Tricycle antidepressants (amitriptyline) • Numbing Agents (lidocaine) • Anticonvulsants (Neuontin)
