  1. The Knowledge and Innovation Community on “Sustainable Energy”Outline of a proposal Hans-Jörg Bauer for Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Harald Bolt for FZ Jülich and RWTH Aachen: JARA

  2. European Energy Technologies The SET Plan Well defined elements are: - Industrial Initiatives - Technology Platforms - European Energy Research Alliance EIT-KIC EIT-KIC „Sustainable Energy“ and SET Plan: Focus on industrial innovation and the connection to education (people) KIC Breeding ground for innovation in sustainable energy

  3. Vision(work under way) The Carbon Paradigm: burn fossile fuels; produce CO2 as burden

  4. Vision(work under way) The Carbon Paradigm: burn fossile fuels; produce CO2 as burden Vision statement This KIC will change the carbon paradigm: Carbon is too valuable for „just one cycle“ We establish the basics for a future carbon cycle economy.

  5. The Carbon Paradigm: burn fossile fuels; produce CO2 as burden Vision(work under way) Vision statement This KIC will change the carbon paradigm: Carbon is too valuable for „just one cycle“ We establish the basics for a future carbon cycle economy. The Carbon Revolution

  6. The concept (1) • We • recycle CO2 and process synfuels or use it for value-added hydrocarbons • employ electric energy from renewables for the recycling of CO2 • employ hydrogen as storage medium, chemical process component, and fuel for regulating electric power • need baseload electricity from coal/nuclear- integrate electricity/heat generation and chemical processes • conceive an efficient transnational distribution system (grid)

  7. The concept (2) People We will educate and train the people neededfor a future carbon cycle economyof Europe. Their mission: Bring about the carbon revolution and build the sustainable energy system!

  8. Regions/Local Nodes (Under Discussion!) AGH * to be developed within the initial phases of the KIC

  9. Bringing a new facet into the SET Plan KIC on Sustainable Energy as proposed: • New approach • Source for innovation: fills gaps in the technology landscape • Builds on European strengths in energy technologies • Potential for huge impact
