  3. Compare these types of Attribution: Acceptable: Impressive: • Wise “‘cost [himself] a chunk of [his] own credibility.’ And The Post’s” (Alexander). • Andrew Alexander, the ombudsman for The Washington Post, noted that Wise “‘cost [himself] a chunk of [his] own credibility.’ And The Post’s.”

  4. Compare: Acceptable: Impressive: • “Mr. Wise said that he agreed with the suspension” (Plambeck). • Plambeck, writer for The New York Times, noted that “Mr. Wise said that he agreed with the suspension.”

  5. Improving our skills: Unacceptable: Acceptable: • “A journalist’s reputation ‘is on the line with every tweet, for better or worse’” (Sreenivasan). • To understand the emerging role of social media, a New York Times reporter interviewed a professor from the journalism school at Columbia University; SreeSreenivasan commented, “A journalist’s reputation ‘is on the line with every tweet, for better or worse’” (Plambeck).

  6. The upper echelon of Attribution Impressive The Rule: • To understand the emerging role of social media, Plambeck interviewed a professor from the journalism school at Columbia University: “A journalist’s reputation ‘is on the line with every tweet, for better or worse’” (Sreenivasanqtd in Plambeck). • If you’re citing a source from within another source, indicate that to be the case, either in your setup or in your parenthetical citation.

  7. I understood the attribution lesson • Fully • Mostly • A little • Not at all

  8. Why is it important to fully attribute quotes? • To avoid plagiarism • To add credibility • To increase clarity • To be convincing • All of the above

  9. Which of the following citation(s) is/are acceptable? • “‘This is not to be treated lightly’” (Vita). • “‘This is not to be treated lightly’” (Plambeck). • “‘This is not to be treated lightly’” (Vita qtdin Plambeck). • “‘This is not to be treated lightly’” (Plambeckqtdin Vita). • All of the above.

  10. Which answer best describes the following example?“I’m paying the price. . . for careless, dumb behavior” (Plambeck). • Acceptable because it’s cited. • Acceptable because it cites the article the quote came from. • Unacceptable because it uses an ellipsis to change the meaning of the words. • Unacceptable because the citation indicates that Plambeck wrote these words.

  11. Which of the following citation(s) is/are acceptable? • “There’s disagreement among readers” (Wise). • “There’s disagreement among readers” (Alexander). • “There’s disagreement among readers” (Wise qtdin Alexander). • “There’s disagreement among readers” (Wise qtdin The Post). • Both 1 & 3.

  12. Why isn’t it acceptable to cite any quotes from these articles as simply (Wise) • Because that implies he is the writer of the article. • Because it misleads the reader • Because the information is not traceable from the Works Cited. • Because he’s the subject of the article and not the author of the article. • All of the above.
