  1. Do Now: In your notebooks…. • Write about a time you convinced someone to do something or buy something or believe something? What was it? How did you convince them? Do you think you are good at convincing people?

  3. Persuasive Techniques (Otherwise known as: PROPAGANDA) PROPAGANDA: techniques used to influence opinions, emotions, attitudes or behavior.

  4. What is persuasion? • Generally an appeal to emotion, not intellect. • An attempt to change your behavior • It attempts to “guideyour choice”

  5. Who uses propaganda? • Military • Media • Advertisers • Politicians • You and I!!!

  7. Bandwagon Technique • Everyone is doing it! You should too!!!

  8. Testimonial • Testimonials are quotations or endorsements which connect a famous or respectable person with a product or item.

  9. Loaded Word • Use “loaded” words like . . . • new • improved • best

  10. Misuse of Statistics When the statistics are based on a falsehood.

  11. Name Calling or stereotyping

  12. Snob Appeal The ultimate driving machine • aims to flatter • Makes insinuation that this product is better than others. • “avant garde” ahead of the times. Lexus sports car

  13. Plain Folks • Makes the leaders look like • Plain folks (mom and pop style). • a convincing method to show they are just common people. • Opposite of snob appeal

  14. Transfer -Feelings (good or bad) are transferredto something else. Transfer tries to make you view something in the same way as they view something else. In the Kerry vs. Bush campaign, an internet email circulated showing similar physical characteristics between John Kerry and a Frankenstein monster.

  33. In your groups:Have your leader come and choose: -3-4 magazines &-8 post-it notes.- Identify 7 out of the 8 propaganda techniques. Label them on your post-it and stick them on the advertisement. You will share them!

  34. Individual assignment: Due Monday Choose a type of persuasive device. Come up with an advertisement. You must use color!You may use ONLY the following:1.) Misuse of statistics2.)
