  1. Incoming 6th grade Registration Maus Middle School Spring 2011 We are The Pride!

  2. A few words of welcome from Mr. McClendon…

  3. Registration Card &Course Guide… 6th Grade • All students should have a registration card and course guide. These are also available on the Maus website: www.friscoisd.org/maus

  4. 3. Required Classes • All students are required to take the following classes… • ILA or PreAP ILA • Math or PreAP Math • Science • Social Studies • Computer Literacy& Study Skills (A/B day rotation) • PE/Health

  5. Gifted and Talented studentsGT ILA The purpose of this course is to provide students enrolled in the Frisco ISD GT (Quest) program with comprehensive and in-depth language arts instruction connected to multiple disciplines such as math, art, science, and music. Instruction is literature-based, though students will also be taught grammar and Greek/Latin vocabulary. The curriculum follows Texas standards, so students are not required to complete more work than their peers; we simply delve deeper into material and allow for more complexity of thought. In addition, participation in the GT-ILA course provides students with preparation for the rigor of high school AP courses and exams through goal-setting and writing practice. Emphasis is placed on higher levels of thinking and the creation of original, professional-quality products. • In May, GATES (the GT parent group) will host the 2nd annual Incoming GT 6th Graders event wherein the middle school teachers will specifically address the expectations and experiences for this course.

  6. Specifics to know about Math choices…Mrs. Wisneski, 6th grade Assistant Principal http://www.friscoisd.org/video.aspx?v=4UcA7ZiTKe4

  7. PreAP Maintenance Criteria • PreAP Maintenance Criteria (for all grade levels): • A student who earns a 70 or below in 2 six week grading periods will be placed on academic probation.

  8. Teacher Recommendation for PreAP • If your child is thinking about signing up for PreAP ILA or PreAP math, it is a good idea to seek input from his or her teacher. • There is a place on the schedule card for the teacher to sign to let us know that your child has talked with the teacher and he/she recommends your child for PreAP. This signature is not absolutely necessary for your child to enroll in PreAP, but it will be a great place to start!

  9. TAKS Tests TAKS (for all grade levels): If your child does not meet expectations on any section of TAKS, your child will be scheduled into the appropriate TAKS preparation class (Math lab or Reading lab). According to state law, we are required to provide your child with intense accelerated instruction to promote future academic success. This class(es) will take the place of the elective.

  10. Electives Each student needs to rank the electives, with1 being the first choice and 5 being the last choice.

  11. Elective Presentations!

  12. Schedule Changes Schedule Changes: Schedule changes are allowed for the following reasons: 1. Student is missing a required class. (math, science, social studies, ILA) 2. Too many/too few classes on the schedule. 3. Need to change between a Pre-AP and Regular level class. Please make sure you choose classes carefully and that you understand the schedule change policy.

  13. Parent Information… Please make sure you have included appropriate phone numbers in case we have any questions and need to contact you this summer. A parent or guardian needs to sign the card before turning it in… _______________________________ _____________________ Parent Name Phone Number _______________________________ Parent Signature

  14. 5. Turn in theREGISTRATIONcard. • ALLregistration cards are due to your child’s Elementary school teacher no later than Friday, February 25. • Any cards turned in after the deadline will be processed last.

  15. Maus Cub Camp • Information will be sent out to students before the end of this year, in a summer mailing, and will be posted on our website, but the tentative date is Friday, August 5th. • Students will: * receive schedule and locker * meet their teachers / other students * practice locker * get a “feel” for middle school

  16. Tips for new 6th graders and parents • Organize locker before 1st day of school. Students can bring locker gear to Cub Camp and will have some time during locker practice to arrange their locker. • Have one large binder with dividers or folders for each class or two binders, one for morning and one for afternoon—you might have to experiment to find best system for your student. The main thing is for students to have a separate place/folder for each class’s materials. • Encourage your child to clean binder(s) and locker out regularly • Encourage your child to use a homework folder • Check grades on Home Access Center • Use agenda and establish routine of checking agenda at home • Make sure the campus has up-to-date phone numbers and e-mail • Have your child attend training camp if possible!

  17. A word from PTA…
