  5. INTRODUCTION OF RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY

  6. At the end of tonight: Students will understand the term radiologic technology and the health care team. Students will understand definitions of radiation and its correlation to the EMS. Students will be familiar with the discovery of x-rays Students will be able to identify and describe various modalities in the imaging sciences. Students will be able to describe career pathways. Student will be able to briefly describe education pathways and locate ECC Rad Tech website.

  7. Terminology • Study group • Radiologic technology • Imaging sciences • X-ray • Radioactive • Radiant energy • EMS • Visible light • Wavelength • Frequency • Background radiation • Radon • Cosmic radiation • Terrestrial radiation • Man-made radiation • NCRP • Wilhelm Roentgen • Skin erythema • ASRT • Imaging modality • Certification • Registration • Radiologist • Radiographer • Radiograph • Licensure • ARRT • R.T. • C.R.T • Primary exam • Post-primary exam • Radiography • Nuclear medicine • Radiation therapy • Magnetic resonance imaging • Sonography-ultrasound • Mammography • Computed tomography

  9. Imaging Sciences • Name of few imaging sciences…..

  10. Homework Assignment

  11. Introduction to RT Preconceived Ideas regarding X-ray field

  12. The Incredible Hulk was hit by a gamma bomb in order to become the Hulk. Can this really happen? Peter Parker was bit by a radioactive spider and gains his “spidey” powers. Can this really happen? Irradiated vegetables are dangerous because they become radioactive. Is this true? After the x-ray exposure, the technologist must wait at least a minute before entering room because the radiation is still present. Cell phones give off radiation and can cause cancer. Cockroaches can survive the radiation from a nuclear blast and will take over the world when it happens. Too much radiation or too many x-rays will cause you to glow in the dark. The x-ray program is easier than the nursing program.

  13. Radiant Energy

  14. Introduction to RT Background Radiation

  15. Background Radiation

  16. Wilhelm Roentgen November 8, 1895

  17. History of X-rays Clarence Dally 1st fatality of cumulative dose of radiation Multiple reports of eye damage due to x-ray Multiple reports of skin erythema due to x-ray exposure Has this changed?

  18. History of X-rays Emergence of X-ray into a Medical Field • 1st Rad Tech considered to be Edward Jerman • Founding of ASXT in 1920 • Name change to ASRT in 1964 due to the proliferation of specialties • No longer “tech trade” but now a profession • Profession needs analytical thinking and problem solving skills

  19. History of X-rays

  20. Introduction to RT Radiologic Technology High Tech Profession High Touch Profession

  21. IMAGING MODALITIES No longer an “x-ray department” at hospitals

  22. IMAGING MODALITIES • Certification, Registration and Licensure for Technologists • Radiologist vs. Radiographer • Certification • Licensure • Modalities

  23. IMAGING MODALITIES • Certification by ARRT • Requires education • Requires proficiency in clinical exams • Requires examination • Requires Registration • Certifies that technologist has been trained and is proficient in performing exams. • Does NOT grant license to practice • Uses designation of R.T.-Registered Technologist

  24. IMAGING MODALITIES • Licensing by Each State • Grants permission to take x-rays • Sometimes requires exams • Requires fee, CEU’s • California uses the designation of CRT, Certified Radiologic Technologist

  25. IMAGING MODALITIES • Colleen McFaul, R.T., C.R.T. • Edward Jerman, R.T. • Homer Simpson, C.C. Registered Technologist, Certified Radiologic Technologist licensed in Calif Registered Technologist Cartoon Character !!

  26. IMAGING MODALITIES

  27. Modalities • Radiography • Mammography • Radiology assistant • Nuclear Medicine • Radiation Therapy • Computed Tomography • Ultrasound (Sonography) • Magnetic Resonance • Fluoroscopy • Interventional-angiography (vessels)

  28. IMAGING MODALITIESDiagnostic Radiographer

  29. Diagnostic Radiographer

  30. Diagnostic Radiographer IMAGING MODALITIESDiagnostic Radiographer

  31. Diagnostic Radiographer

  32. IMAGING MODALITIESFluoroscopy • Uses specialized x-ray units to produce “real time” images of the body in motion • Similar to video vs. still pictures

  33. Fluoroscopy IMAGING MODALITIESFluoroscopy Fluoroscopy Barium swallow
