  1. Plate Tectonics Part Two: Sea Floor Spreading

  2. Objective: TEKS 8.9A Explain following about seafloor spreading theory: • Whose idea and when presented • Describe evidences to support • What was the importance of this discovery • What is reverse magnetism

  3. Atlantic Ocean Growing ? Engage • Is the Atlantic Ocean growing? Explain • If it is, explain why Earth is not getting bigger. • If it is not, explain why volcanoes produce more land, yet the oceans still cover most of Earth.

  4. Atlantic Ocean Growing ? Explore • Demo • Take one sheet of paper and cut in half (hotdog style) • Tape ends together, creating one long sheet • Fold in half (where taped) • Insert open ends into slit of box • Pull up paper slowly making marks on paper at teacher specified distances

  5. Atlantic Ocean Growing ? Explore In journal draw picture of model and label. Write the question OR restate question in answer • How does this model seafloor spreading • What do the marks on the paper represent • Based on this model, where is the oldest rock on the seafloor found

  6. Evidences Explain • video • Harry Hess develops Sea Floor Spreading Theory • Theory based on sonar (depth sounding device) • Discovered the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (mountain under water) • Newer rocks found in middle of ocean, older rocks found near continents • Earth crust recycled via method called subduction • Gave support to Wegener’s Continental Drift Theory

  7. Evidences Explain Wegener’s Continental Drift Theory + Hess’s Sea Floor Spreading Theory = Plate Tectonic Theory

  8. Reversed Magnetism ? Elaborate We know a compass will point to the north pole. Do you think it will point to the south pole?

  9. Closure: TEKS 8.9A Write the question OR restate question in answer (You may highlight area if in your journal) Who developed theory of Sea Floor Spreading? How did he support his theory? What was the importance of this discovery? What is reverese magnetism?

  10. Closure TEKS 8.9A Working in pairs create a concept map to include following ideas. Alfred Wegener Plate Tectonics Continental Drift Harry Hess Sea Floor Spreading Evidences of continental drift Evidences of sea floor spreading

  11. Concept Map - How to Start with one word or idea everything falls under Like in this case Plate Tectonics Then what are key points of plate tectonics Yep, ur right – Continental Drift - Sea Floor Spreading Under Continental Drift, what do we know? And so on

  12. Concept Map - Rubric
