MagLab Overview: Snapshot of Today Budget User Programs Still $1.25M below the $162M full funding for 2008-2012…due to underfunding in 2008 Challenges due to ongoing pressure on the State of Florida budget…cut of ~$1.4M in annual State funding Severe cash flow crunch due to late arrival of final $6.5M of 2010 NSF funding Early arrival of $6M in 2011 NSF funding…much appreciated to position us for 2011 Renewal Proposal Integrated User Proposal submission and review Can we avoid the Committee on Visitors review ? NSF Two-step Plan: 1) National Academy of Sciences Study on Magnet Lab Science. 2) Recompetition for the Nation’s Magnet Lab

Mid IR Undulator Far IR Undulator Near IR Undulator Broadband THz UNIQUE: Three Co-located Narrow-Band Light Sources UNIQUE: …co-located with Overlapping Broad-Band Source ‘THIR’ Laser: Reliable Components Assembled in a Unique Configuration www.magnet.fsu.edu Click “Publications”, then “Big Light” 5 m UNIQUE: Three Co-located Narrow-Band Light Sources with Overlapping Frequency Ranges… continuously covering 0.3THz to 120THz (mid-IR) Ultra-fast THz light pulses (1 psec pulses with a 10MHz Rep Rate) UNIQUE: Co-located with world’s strongest magnetic fields, a thermodynamic variable whose energy scales are resonant with ‘THIR’ spectroscopy Ultra-bright THz light pulses (1,000,000 times peak brightness of THz sources at Third Generation synchrotrons) (BigLight will have >100W average power) UNIQUE: Automatic time-synchronization of Near IR, Mid-IR and Broadband THz sources (< 20 fsec jitter for pump-probe experiments)
