  2. Rice is life Hybrid Rice- Sustainable Technology Need of the hour Agenda

  3. Rice is life • Rice is the most important cereal grown globally • Major staple food for about half of the world population • Today, around 600 million tons of Rough rice are produced each year • Cultivated in 113 countries in the world • And also, a way of life and a cultural heritage: “ • Life without rice is not conceivable in most Asian countries”

  4. Rice is a truly global crop and an important corner stone of the Asian agriculture Milled Production in 2012 Vietnam(6%) Thailand (4%) Indonesia/Malaysia/Philippines Others Middle East Thailand Pakistan Vietnam 3.2m t 7.6m t 7.7m t 5.3m t 3.7m t China India Africa China (31%) Bangladesh(7%) Indonesia(8%) 470.0m t Others (22%) India(22%) Source: USDA 27.4m t Major Exporter Major Importer

  5. Rice is life Hybrid Rice- Sustainable Technology Need of the hour Agenda

  6. Hybrids play an important role in shaping a sustainable rice production Sustainable Rice Production Economy Ecology Society • Yield security & increased productivity • Secured income of smallholder farmers • Reduce imports, enable exports • Innovative solutions & technology transfer • Adaptation to climate change • GHGMitigation • Increased water efficiency • More resilience to pests and diseases • Food security & safety • Livelihood & rural development: avoid rural exodus, allows education • Improves labor conditions Sustainable intensification of rice production requires sound partnerships Page 17

  7. A lot of Asian countries still lag behind in terms of average yield

  8. Hybrid Rice: Enhancing yields • Rice hybrids have the potential to yield 15 to 35% more than the best HYV grown in similar conditions • More hardy in adverse growing conditions, especially in unfavorable soil and climatic conditions – such as temporary drought stress • The lower seed planting density and higher yield compensates thehigher seed price per kg • An enormous development potential for hybrid rice following the example of China Hybrid rice status in the world

  9. *Current Hybrid Rice markets in Asia (excl. China):India, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh Hybrid Rice Acreage Development* • It is possible to grow Hybridization to 14% by 2022 (in current countries) • But Hybrid Rice adoption has to accelerate if we want to achieve 30% more rice by 2030 (vs 2010) • Not only in current countries but also in new ones Mio ha Hybrid Acreage CAGR: 13% Internal Estimates

  10. Rice is life Hybrid Rice- Sustainable Technology Need of the hour Agenda

  11. Need of the hour • Hybrid rice is a proven technology • Take up Hybrid rice development & adoption in Mission mode • In collaborative with and in inclusive manner involving all stakeholders (PPP mode) • Most important is to Include the Excluded • Research & Development – • Germplasm movement in line with international standards, • Access & movement • PRA - Sanitary and Phytosanitory measures • Reduce the complexity in variety release procedure • Incentivize R&D to develop suitable hybrids ( Tax benefit on investment ) • A broad germplasm base to support an efficient breeding program and a strong expertise in seed production. • Commercial seed movement • Harmonization of seed movement in the region/global alignment • Seed Production – currently lower productivity/acre, • storage/ transportation facility for efficient supply chain • IP Protection – enforcement against counterfeits • Extension and education - adapt suitable agronomic practices
