1. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old. He moved back to the US in 1952 and worked for the NY Times and an ad agency. The first book he illustrated was Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin. Not soon after that, he wrote and illustrated his famous The Very Hungry Caterpillar which has been translated into more than 30 languages and sold over seventeen million copies. Eric Carle has written and illustrated over 70 books, many of which have been best sellers. Eric Carle’s art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. His art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images.
