  2. Programs Offered • Foster Care • Outpatient Therapy • Community Support • Intensive In Home • Assessments • Medication Management

  3. Intensive In Home Services • Provide counseling services to clients in a natural environment. • The goal of Intensive In Home is to defuse current crises in the home with the family and help prevent out of home placement of children or adolescents. • The treatment is limited to usually around a 5-6 month period. • A Person- Centered Approach is used to help patients with: • Self help and living skills training in youth • Parenting classes for adults • Connections to community resources and services • Monitoring and managing psychiatric disorders in a healthy way in the home.

  4. Intensive In Home • The program utilizes a team approach to treating children that are at risk of out of home placement, and those who are transitioning. • Each team is lead by a licensed clinician QP [qualified professional] to have meetings about each specific clients treatment needs, and concerns. • There are also team leadings involving DSS, occasionally family members or clients themselves.

  5. My Duties • I was actually the first intern that the Wilmington ACCESS Family Health Services has had. • It was really an interesting and great experience to take part in the Intensive In Home Program. • I first completed a training session with fellow counselors in the Person Centered Approach to Intensive In Home treatment. I was also trained in how to safely restrain children or adults that are violent [i.e.. Hitting, hair pulling, etc. mostly special needs children].

  6. I was given a list by my supervisor Jennifer of the different counselors and their schedules. I was able to work my schedule around the counselors I chose, and who allowed me to observed their family therapy sessions. In the beginning I went with various counselors to clients homes and observed the some therapy sessions Person Centered approach works as follows: The treatment team meets with potential clients for the first time at the office and discusses treatment options. Sessions would then be held in a community center or until the client, counselor and treatment team feel, the therapeutic relationship is comfortable and safe enough to be used in their home.’ After sessions in the community, the at home sessions help see the client in his or her naturalistic setting and helps to address unseen issues that can be addressed. The goal of the person centered approach is all about the individual clients needs and uses homework assignments and redirected questions to help the clients understand problems and work on treatment. My Duties

  7. My Duties • I was able to follow a few cases with a specific counselor for most of my hours which helped me see the transition of treatment across different weeks. • I loved working with the counselor I chose she was a wonderful help and a great inspiration in becoming a psychologist. • During the sessions she allowed me occasionally to interact with the clients and help with some of the homework assignments. I suggested art therapy techniques for some clients and she used some of my suggestions [drawing emotions for a young client with anger management problems]. • Overall, I had such an amazing experience because not only did I get to see specific clients for long periods of time: • I was able to stay with the same counselor • See clients in a naturalist setting • And occasionally interact with the therapy sessions

  8. Recommendation • I would recommend this site to any one who is interested in traveling to see therapy sessions in a naturalistic setting. • It is family and child therapy based which is also included in the other programs ACCESS has to offer. • There are many options at ACCESS with different types of counselors and approaches to therapy. Everyone is very nice and helpful at the office, but you will need to make your own schedule and contact the appropriate counselor to partake in sessions. • If Person Centered Approach and behavioral therapy is of interest then this is the perfect site for you!
