  1. Fruit Fly Lab Report

  2. Basics • Completed individually – everyone’s should be different except for combined data • Typed • Due 1/20 or Earlier – on paper, unless “printer broken” then email • 40 points

  3. Format • Top: Amy Fansler Other group members 6D Flies 1/20/2011 4th Period PHH The Outcome of Crossing Vestigial Wings with Wild Type Flies

  4. DO. NOT. • PLAGIARIZE! This means COPYING and PASTING without citing!!!! • I WILL BE ABLE TO TELL • I WILL GOOGLE SEARCH YOUR SENTENCE • YOU WILL BE PENALIZED.

  5. Introduction • Describe Drosophila • Why we use it • The traits you are studying (wild type, sepia, white, vestigial, etc.) • List possible genotypes and phenotypes of flies from parental flies • Exceeds expectations…

  6. Intro, Continued • Research Question = what are you trying to find out??? • Example: “If two parent flies are heterozygous for Vestigial Wings, should their offspring conform to a 3:1 ratio??” • Ww x Ww = 3: W- and 1: ww • What traits are you studying?

  7. Intro, continued • Hypothesis • What proportion do you think the offspring should come out to? • This should be the “expected” proportion • Ex: 3:1, or 9:3:3:1 for dihybrid

  8. Intro, continued • Predictions • Show punnett squares of your P, F1, and F2 flies • Summarize expected proportions/percentages • This explains your hypothesis • Questions so far???

  9. Materials • What equipment did you use? • What was the purpose of that equipment? • List in bullets – not paragraph form

  10. Methods • Same as procedure • What steps did you take to do this experiment each day?

  11. Results • Table format Example Data: F1 Flies: 16 Wild Type Wings, 0 Vestigial Wings F2 Flies: 39 Wild Type Wings, 4 Vestigial Wings *Remember, our expected outcome was 3:1 or 75% to 25%

  12. Chi Square Analysis • We will do this later once everyone has their data • It is to see how reliable your data is… or how much error there was in your experiment…

  13. Conclusion • Dominant/Recessive? • Autosomal/Sex-Linked? • Why do you say this?? Cite your data • “Since there were no vestigial wings in the F1 generation, but there were in the F2 generation, this leads us to believe that vestigial wings are recessive.” Yaddayadda. • You will “accept” or “reject” your hypothesis based on the chi square analysis we do later • Did it follow the expected outcome?

  14. Resources • ANYTHING you use from the internet • Citationmachine.net gives you citation • MLA format • Number them, and use numbers during introduction/conclusion.

  15. Grading • Final CUMULATIVE exam = 60 points • Lab report = 40 points • -5 points for each day late • Introduction = 15 points • Materials and Methods = 5 points • Results = 10 points • Conclusion = 5 points • Resources = 5 points
