  1. Questions to ponder… • What did completing the career project teach you? • Why are goals important? • Do you prefer articles or videos? Why?

  2. Videos… • We can watch videos every day instead of articles. • Raise your hand if this sounds like a good idea to you.

  3. Videos vs. Articles • Here’s the catch: • EVERY TIME you’re late, you go straight to the phone and call home WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. • Explain to your family member why you were late. • Sit down and enjoy learning. • “But sometimes I’m late for a good reason!” • I understand that. You can explain to your family member why you are late. • This is an all-or-nothing deal. If you’re late, you call. Every time.

  4. Videos vs. Articles • “Haha. This teacher boosie. Imma call my own cell phone and leave a message instead of calling my mom.” • I’m not that stupid. • I document all tardies on my clipboard. Every Friday, I’ll call home to a random few people who were tardy. • It will be worse if you lie. • This will probably mess up your weekend. • Just do the right thing, follow the procedure, everything will be ok.

  5. NO WRITING TODAY • This is another surprise. MOST days we will write, but some days we won’t. • You’ll never know… it will be a surprise. • This arrangement is fine with me provided that when we DO write, you complete a true FREE WRITE. • Writing for the entire allotted time– not stopping after a certain amount of sentences.

  6. LOOKING BACK AT OUR GOALS Questions to ponder: What is a New Year’s Resolution? Did you make a New Year’s Resolution? If yes, what is it? If no, why not?

  7. Why Do We Make Resolutions? • To change something that maybe we don’t like about ourselves. • To change bad habits • To do something challenging • To make ourselves better people • To have something to work towards

  8. Individual Goals Think, Pair, Share • Do you remember what your individual goals are? • If you forgot your Individual Goals, why did you? • If you remembered your Individual Goals, why did you?

  9. What makes a good goal? Making our Goals FAM: 1. Feasible 2. Ambitious 3. Measurable

  10. Feasible • A good goal needs to be something you will be able to do. • A good goal needs to be realistic. • A good goal needs to be something that is not outrageous at this point.

  11. Ambitious • A good goal can not be easy. • A good goal needs to be challenging. • A good goal requires hard work to reach.

  12. Measurable • A good goal needs to have a clear starting point. • There needs to be a way to tell if you are on track to completing your goal. • A good goal needs to have a clear finish point so you know if you completed it.

  13. Let’s FAM an Old Goal • Original Academic Goal: “I will do well in all of my classes.” • Is this a good goal? Yes. • Is this a FAM goal? No.

  14. Is this goal Feasible? “I will do well in all of my classes.” • Yes, this goal is feasible because: 1. Doing well in my classes is something I can do. 2. Doing well in my classes is realistic and not outrageous.

  15. Is this goal Ambitious? “I will do well in all of my classes.” • Yes, this goal is ambitious because: 1. Doing well in school is not easy, it is challenging. 2. It will require a lot of work to accomplish this goal.

  16. Is this goal Measurable? “I will do well in all of my classes.” • No, it is not measurable because: 1. There is no clear starting point. 2. There is no way to tell if I am on track to accomplish my goal. 3. There is no clear finishing point to tell if I accomplished my goal.

  17. Let’s Make it Measurable! What does “well” mean? • To me, “well” means A’s and B’s. • Let’s FAM the goal: “I will earn A’s and B’s in all of my classes.”

  18. Let’s Make it Measurable! What about the start and finish points? • The school year has already begun and it ends in June. “I will get A’s and B’s in all of my classes by the final June report card.”

  19. Let’s Make it Measurable! Wait a minute, science is really difficult for me and I don’t think I can get an A. Let’s get more specific: “I will earn A’s in all of my classes and a B in science by the final June report card.”

  20. Let’s Evaluate the Goal “I will get A’s in all of my classes and a B in science by the final June report card.” • FAM: • 1. Is it Feasible? • 2. Is it Ambitious? • 3. Is it Measurable?

  21. Revisiting Our Individual Goals Original Academic Goal: I will do well in all of my classes. Revised FAM Academic Goal: I will earn A’s in all of my classes and a B in science by the final June report card.

  22. Closing Just like a New Year’s Resolution: • Goals give us something to work towards. • Goals give us a challenge. • Goals make us better and stronger people.

  23. Now it’s your turn! • For the rest of class today, we are going to FAM our old individual goals.

  24. Chain of Goals • Pick one FAM goal related to school and write it on a sentence strip (EVERYONE). • In the last few minutes of class, we’ll read out our goals and attach them to the chain (VOLUNTEERS).
