Project Objectives • Enhancing the skills and expertise of interested SMEs/agro-industries/tourism entities/rural institutions and financiers on renewable energy development • Strengthening the capacity of local, national and regional financiers in the development of pro-poor renewable energy and energy efficiency options in sub-Sahara Africa. • Promoting an enabling environment for renewable energy and energy efficiency among SMEs/agro-industries/tourism entities/rural institutions in Eastern and Southern Africa

Expected Activities • Phase I: Inception Phase • Launching of the Project • Phase II: Project Implementation Phase • Capacity Building • Models for demonstration & training • Training seminars • Attachments • Investment Promotion • Identify SMEs in renewable energy to support to scale up operations • Identify end-users who could benefit from use of renewable energy • Policy Development and Outreach • Promote sound renewable energy policies for adoptions • Seminars for policy makers

Expected Outcomes • Investment support for at least 10 SMEs/agro-industries/tourist entities/rural institutions (feasibility studies, co-financing of equipment) • Capacity building support for at least 10 SMEs/agro-industries/tourist entities/rural institutions • Training for 100 people including specialized hands-on technical training • Regional studies • Models + full-scale and working renewable energy & energy efficiency technologies installed • Large: improved institutional cookstoves wind pumps, wind turbines, boiler components, steam turbine components, small hydro components, control systems, etc • Small: improved household cookstoves, monitoring equipment, heat recovery systems, daylighting, solar water heaters, solar photovoltaics, etc • Supportive renewable energy and energy efficiency policies proposed • Draft standard power purchase agreements/Feed-in Tariffs proposed • Engagement with policy makers at various levels

Progress to Date • 10 demontration units (biomass institutional stoves) installed in Uganda • Consultative Meetings with financing instutions, donor agencies and other key stakeholders. • Signed Cooperation Agreements with 2 Potential National Partners • Commissioned 7 studies in project countries (Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya) • Over 150 potential initiatives have been identified for support

This Workshop… Kenya Tanzania Uganda Zambia • Key Objectives: • Sensitize stakeholders on the benefits of renewable energy and energy efficiency • To bring together stakeholders interested in biomass energy specifically in the development of institutional energy-efficient woodstoves for schools.  • Set the stage for replicating the limited success registered in schools in and around Jinja in others parts of Uganda as well as other countries within the region • Propose a sustainable financing mechanism in which schools and other institutions could benefit from by obtaining financing for installation of institutional energy-efficient stoves.  • Learn from the challenges facing energy-efficient stove dissemination and options available to overcome the challenges identified • Participating countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya • Participating institutions: • Educational Institutions – Schools and Universities • Government Agencies • CSOs • NGOs • Research Institutions • Micro-finance Institutions

This Workshop… • Workshop Organization: • Organized by KORD • First 2 days on CABURESA and 3rd day on SustainergyWeb • Interactive format: Presentations, Plenary Sessions, Group Sessions, Exhibit and Field Visits • Key Issues Addressed: • Benefits of institutional energy-efficient woodstoves to schools.  • Potential for replication of the limited success registered in chools in and around Jinja area within other parts of Uganda and in other countries within the region • Financing options for installation of institutional energy-efficient stoves in schools and other institutions • Lessons learnt from the challenges facing energy-efficient stove dissemination and options available to overcome the identified challenges • Participating countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya • Participating institutions: • Educational Institutions – Schools and Universities • Government Agencies • CSOs • NGOs • Research Institutions • Micro-finance Institutions
