  2. McCarthyism • A period of political persecution during the 1950s • Led by the US senator Joseph McCarthy • Term came to signify any type of reckless political persecution • Associated with the Red Scare

  3. Joseph McCarthy • Wisconsin Senator during the 1940’s and 1950’s • Made a public accusation that over two hundred communists had infiltrated the government

  4. Beginning • McCarthy claimed to have a list of people in the State Department that were members of the American Communist Party • Never had any evidence but it did not stop him from making accusations • List was not secret and was published

  5. Victims • Many public officials and citizens were accused of being communists and were blacklisted • Reputations were destroyed

  6. Accusations • Leveled his accusations against the United States Army • Insulted the Army and American public • Helped lead to the decline of his popularity

  7. Army-McCarthyHearings • Hearings were held that became known as the Army-McCarthy hearings • They were televised • Aired between April 22 and June 17, 1954 for 188 hours of broadcast time with 22 million viewers

  8. Decline • Few were willing to stand up against McCarthy • Many things contributed to the decline • Strong criticism is also cited as playing a role • Died down by 1954

  9. Effects • Many people lost their jobs • Had created an anti-democratic atmosphere • Heightened fears of communist influence
