  2. When do you use Personal Pronouns? • Personal pronouns are used to replace any noun in a sentence. The Summer is Hot.  It is hot. Der Sommer is heiß.  Er ist Heiß.  Just like in the English language, nouns can be replaced with a personal pronoun. In German, personal pronouns are based on gender, being plural or singular, and where it is in the sentence.

  3. Personal Pronouns

  4. Nominative - Subject • Das Land ist groß.  Es ist groß. • ‘Das Land’ is a neutered noun and its singular, so the pronoun es is used. • Die Lehrerin steht an der Tafel.  Sie steht an der Tafel. • ‘Die Lehrerin’ is a proper noun, so the pronoun Sie is used.

  5. Accusative – Direct Object Accusative pronouns are used to replace nouns in the direct object. • Dieter kauft einen Kuli.  Dieter kauft ihn. • ‘einen Kuli’ is a masculine noun in the direct object, so it is replaced with ihn. • Kennst du Frau Kuhlmann?  Kennst du Sie? • ‘Frau Kuhlmann’ is a proper noun in the direct object, so it is replaced with Sie.

  6. Sentences with the verb sein Nouns following the verb sein are replaced with a nominative pronoun because it is considered a predicate nominative. • Mein Lehrer ist mein Vater.  Mein Lehrer ist ihn. • Mein Lehrer ist er.
