  1. Metal reactions By: Hamad Al Mannai

  2. What are Metals • A metal is a chemical element that is a good conductor of both electricity and heat and forms cations and ionic bonds with non-metals. In chemistry, a metal (Ancient Greek métallon, μέταλλον) is an element, compound, or alloy characterized by high electrical conductivity. ..

  3. Research question • Does a connection or relationship exist between the reactivity of a metal and when it was discovered?

  4. Reactivity scale • Potassium mostly reactive • sodium • calcium • Magnesium • Aluminum • Zinc • Iron • Lead • Copper • Sliver • Gold not at all reactive

  5. Potassium Potassium was discovered in 1807 by British scientist Sir Humphry Davy, who derived it from caustic potash (KOH)where was it discovered and when His first successes came in 1807 with the separation of potassium from molten potash and of sodium from common salt. He described potassium as particles which, when thrown intowater, "skimmed about excitedly with a hissing sound, and soon burned with a lovely lavender light." Dr. John Davy, Humphry's brother, said that Humphry "danced around and was delirious with joy" at his discovery. These results were presented in the Bakerian lecture of November, 1807.

  6. Sodium • Elemental sodium was first isolated by Sir Humphry Davy in 1807 by passing an electric current through molten sodium hydroxide. Although salt (sodium chloride) was long a part of civilization, sodium does not occur in a pure state because of reactions with oxygen and water.

  7. Calcium • Calcium was known even in the first century when the Ancient Romans used to prepare lime as calcium oxide. However, it was not really isolated up until 1808. It was then that Sir Humphry Davy isolated calcium by electrolyzing a mixture of mercuric oxide and lime in England. Davy was attempting to isolate calcium and on hearing that Berzelius and Pontin had succeeded in preparing calcium amalgam by means of electrolyzing lime in mercury, Davy tried it himself. He had worked with electrolysis all through his life and was also the one who discovered or rather who isolated magnesium, barium and strontium. Calcium is the fifth most abundant element that can be found in the Earth's crust. Calcium is not only indispensable for living organisms, especially in cell physiology, but is also the most widespread metal in many animals.

  8. Magnesium Magnesium was discovered by Joseph Black, in England, in 1755. The element was isolated by A. A. B. Bussy and Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808
