  2. INTRO • Lafayette was born at the castle of Chavagnac, in Auvergne September 6,1757 living a luxurious life. • Died in Paris May 20, 1834 • Marquis father died when he was 2 years old. • His mother and grandfather died 11 years later, he inherited a large fortune.

  3. Characteristic • He was the youngest general during the French revolution. • He went to military school in Versailles • Marquis de Lafayette is not actually his full name. Gilbert du Motier is his real name. Marquis is just a title and Lafayette is were he was from. • Studied at the Military Academy in Versailles and became a captain in the French cavalry at age 16.

  4. Questions • 1792, Lafayette unsuccessfully tried to curb radicalism against the monarchy. The King and Queen would not assist or help him. The troops he tried to turn on the Paris would not obey his orders. Lafayette was denounced as a traitor and fled the country.

  5. Question Continued • 1777, Lafayette purchased a ship, and set sail for America with a crew, to fight in the revolution against the British.

  6. Political Influence • In 1787 Lafayette was a member of the assembly of the notables. • He also was in the states general as a representative of the nobility of Auvergne in 1789.

  7. Influence Continued • Lafayette was chosen as commander in chief of the national guard. • He held that position for three years until October 8, 1791

  8. Family • Married Antasse Adrienne de Noailles on April 11 1774 • He had 2 daughter with his wife Antasse. • A soon named George Washington lafayette.
