  1. A multi-tissue type genome-scale metabolic network for analysis of whole-body systems physiology Bordbar, Feist, Usaite-Black, Woodcock, Palsson, Famili BMC Systems Biology 2011

  2. Obese vs. Diabetic Obese • Gene expression samples from gastric bypass patients in fasting state. • Objective: AM triacylGlycerol + MM protein  HM glucose • Unique reactions: • Gene expression: 27 obese, 40 diabetic • Multi-tissue model: 29 obese, 94 diabetic • Expression FP: 39 of 67 • Differences mainly in AM

  3. Obese vs. Diabetic Obese • Diabetic AM: • [deminished insulin response]  • carnitine shuttle and FA oxidation  • Elevated free FA, lactate  • HM gluconeogenesis  hyperglycemia • Diabetic catalase is inactive  causes oxidative damage to tissues • Diabetic cysteinedeoxygenase is inactive (breaks down excess cysteine to pyruvate and taurine)
