  1. Spanish Customs for the Holidays

  2. “Las Posadas” • Posada is Spanish for "lodging", or "accommodation"; it is said in plural because it is celebrated more than one day in that period. • Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration with origins in Spain, now celebrated mainly in Mexico, Guatemala and parts of the Southwestern United States, beginning December 16th and ending December 24th, on evenings (about 8 or 10 PM). • Typically, each family in a neighborhood will schedule a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of December and finishing on the 24th. Every home has a nativity scene and the hosts of the Posada act as the innkeepers. The neighborhood children and adults are the pilgrims (los peregrinos), who have to request lodging by going house to house singing a traditional song about the pilgrims.

  3. “El Gordo” Loteria-The Spanish Christmas Lottery • “El Gordo”-fat • “El Gordo” is a national lottery game organized every year since 1812 by a branch of the Spanish Public Administration • The results of the El Gordo Loteria are announced every year during the Christmas season, and these results of the El Gordo Loteria draw are announced over live television. Every year, this is done on the 22nd of December. It takes slightly over three hours for the draw to be concluded. • The results or the winning numbers of the El Gordo Loteria are sung by children from the San Ilidefonso School in Madrid. One child picks the prize. Another selects the matching ticket number and a third one, sings the result. It is estimated that as much as 98% of Spain watches the draw. • Each of the ticket numbers is sold not just once, but as much as 195 times in a "series". This means that if a ticket number wins, 195 tickets automatically win. This is what increases the results of the El Gordo Loteria. The winning Jackpot number can be won by 19500 people! • Because of the high cost of a single ticket, it is not uncommon for families and friends to collectively pay for tickets. The resultant prize is then shared amongst themselves.

  4. Poinsettia • The poinsettia (po-en-set-e-uh) or flor de noche buena, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to Mexico and Central America.
