  2. Overview Introduction Description of 3DR capabilities Tutorial on correcting common interoperability problems in 3D Studio Max Demonstration of 3DR upload Tutorial on retrieving 3D content from within a game engine

  3. What is the ADL 3D Repository? A tool for sharing 3D content

  4. Problem Space • Increased use of immersive learning technologies for education and training: Simulations, Virtual Worlds, Games • 3D content is difficult to create and expensive • For artists • Reusing 3D models can save them time • “On average, customers save over 20 hours of modeling time when they buy a 3D model” (TurboSquid) • For non-artists • Reusing 3D models may be all they have

  5. ADL 3D Repository Artists and Non-Artists Artists and Non-Artists Download Upload Any Environment Goal: Share 3D content as openly as possible

  6. View and Download • 3D Viewer • Conversion • .fbx, .dae, .3ds, .obj • Model details • Polygon count • Texture count • Creative Commons • Contributor markings

  9. Exporting Models Tutorial Tips and best practices

  10. Why do I need to know this? We often receive questions about getting content into game engines and modeling tools Frequently, problems occur because content is not authored with reusability in mind We do our best to correct problems both manually and automatically 3DSMax is the most common format we are sent. We have to export these manually.

  11. User Survey • I’d like to know a bit about you. How many of you are • Program Managers • Artists • Programmers • What is your level of familiarity with 3DSMAX?

  12. Getting our demo content Please browse to http://3DR.adlnet.gov/Gametech/ Files for the tutorial are here

  13. Tutorial organization • I’ve split this tutorial into 4 steps • Materials • UV’s • Position, Rotation and Scale • Objects and Pivots

  14. Tutorial Lets switch over to 3DSMax now.
