  • Regulation published in the Canada Gazette Part 1-April 26, 2008

  • Followed by 60 day comment period

  • EC to review the comments, then publish the final regulation in Canada Gazette Part 2

  • Not happened yet

  • Regulation enforcement date for markings sub category will be two to three years after the publication date

    • Oil based with Acetone reducer

    • Advantages

      • Can be applied in cooler temperatures

      • No equipment modifications

    • Disadvantages

      • More volatile

      • Poor bead retention indicated to date

    • Presently being used throughout Ontario

    • Equipment modifications completed by most applicators

    • Increased bead retention

  • Disadvantages

    • Long dry times in cold weather

    • Poor performance when applied in cooler temperatures

  • Products are being evaluated by MTO and Municipalities

  • Spray Methyl Methacrylate

    • Approved by MTO as cold weather application product

    • Tested in several Municipalities for performance as a spray durable

  • Cure time 20 minutes

  • Applied in Vaughan under cold conditions as well, over existing traffic paint

Orange temporary markings in construction zones
ORANGE TEMPORARY MARKINGS IN CONSTRUCTION ZONES

  • First tested by the 407 Hwy. in Summer of 2006, Paint

  • Tested that fall by MTO on HWY. 406 two lane, failed application

  • Written into a contract on 427 ,concrete and asphalt in 2007,8

    • Product was specified as Spray methyl Methacrylate orange florescent

    • Orange paint was applied in 2008 on 401 asphalt,

  • MTO has developed a Non Standard Special Provision for

    • Divided roadway situations( same direction)

    • Temporary work zone markings

    • All edge and lane lines in work zones

    • The use of spray MMA

  • Central Region contracts will include orange markings in 2009

  • Currently only one product approved

  • High cost of material application is restricting use of the product

  • Testing three new fluorescent orange products

    • Solvent based paint

    • Water-Borne paint

    • Another MMA

  • All pavement markings are required to be manufactured free from lead after December 31 , 2010

    • lead currently used to give color is low cost

    • Estimated to have poorer visibility and shorter life span
