Research Assistants • REGULAR RAs • CASUAL RAs • Student in good standing • Registered undergraduate level or higher • No posting required • Researcher communicates with student verbally about job requirements and expectations • Hiring is confirmed by letter of appointment (a.k.a. Offer letter) • Continuation of casual RA work is contingent on acquiring and maintaining sufficient funding. • Already holds a Masters or equivalent degree • May be hired on a full-time (35 hrs/wk) or part-time (< 35 hrs/wk) basis • Position must be posted for 5 working days at the Department or Faculty level. • Hiring is confirmed by letter of appointment (a.k.a. Offer letter) • Renewable & Non-Renewable • May qualify for additional benefits

Casual Student Research Assistant2 ways to pay • MINERVA by Appointment • PAYROLL (POPS) bi-weekly • Offer letter stipulating conditions of work, hourly rate, start/end date, number of hours per week, number of weeks. • No fluctuations in work schedule • i.e. $22.50/hr x 10 hrs/week x 15 weeks = $3,375 • 4% vacation pay plus 3.2% holiday indemnity • One-time entry. • Offer letter stipulating conditions of work, hourly rate, start/end date. • Ad hoc hours; fluctuate week to week • Student must complete and submit to Researcher weekly Academic Casual Timesheets • Entitled to 4% vacation pay plus 3.2% holiday indemnity • Researcher will sign and forward to AO for processing via POPS • Multiple submissions during the term

  5. Casual Student Research AssistantRATES OF PAY Minimum @ June 1, 2014 June 1, 2015 signingUndergradGraduateNOTE: Researchers can offer more depending on their budget. In Dept. Of English RAs are typically offered the same hourly rate as TAs, $26.51.

  6. NOTES OF INTEREST • All RAs are paid via Direct Deposit, bi-weekly on Thursdays. • When budgeting take note that all RAs will receive 4% vacation pay plus 3.2% holiday indemnity above their hourly rates. • As of June 1, 2014 3.6%. • Students must have valid Canadian Social Insurance Number in order to be paid. • Non-residents can apply and obtain a CDN SIN so long as long as their Study Permit allows it. • Internal Audit requires that all payments through Payroll or Minerva must have offer letters as supporting documents. • Emails are not an acceptable form of approval in lieu of Researcher’s signature on timesheets and offer letters.
