  4. New Literature • WWI~ breakdown of Western Civilization • Disillusionment (What is the point of life) • Disgust in war (Lost Generation~ Gertrude Stein) • Harlem Renaissance • African American cultural awakening • Expressed pride & unique culture through novels/essays

  5. Art & Architecture • Cubism~ three-dimensional objects as complex patterns of angles & planes • Pablo Picasso • Abstract~ composed only of lines, colors, & shapes • Dada/ Surrealism ~ rejected traditional art movements/believed there was no sense to the world

  8. The Coming Depression… • The U.S. Post WWI (1920s) Leading economic power • American loans backed recovery of Europe • Credit cards emerged • Problems: • Wealth not even (farmers & unskilled workers) • Overproduction of goods=unemployment

The Stock Market • People bought stocks on margins • If a stock is $100 you can pay only $10 now and the rest later when the stock rose • Stocks Fall~ now the person has less than $100 and no $$$ to pay it back • Panic sets in • Worried people tried to sell their stocks all at once • Stock prices crashed wiping out fortunes

  10. Stock Market Crash 1929 • Black Tuesday October 29, 1929 • Overnight people lost everything • Houses, savings accounts.. • Banks/schools/factories closed • Caused more unemployment

  11. Global Impact • U.S. want their $$$ back from Europe Germany suffered • U.S. imposed the highest tariffs in its history • Americans forced to buy American goods • World trade dropped 65%

  12. Political turmoil & economic crises caused Italy and Germany to turn toward totalitarian dictators. Adolf Hitler Benito Mussolini
