Networking • Networking is the ongoing process of building interconnected relationships for the purpose of politicking and socializing. • About building professional relationships and friendships • Networks are clusters of people joined by a variety of links. • Your primary connections give you access to their networks

  5. Why Network? • To get a job or better position • To perform better at your current job • To advance within an organization • To stay current in your field • To maintain mobility • To develop relationships

  7. Self Assessment and Set Objectives • Accomplishments • Write down your accomplishments! • Create a resume Assignment: Create a resume

  8. One-Minute Self Sell • Your opening statement used in networking that quickly summarizes your history and career plan and asks a question. • History: Start with a summary of the highlights of your career or school history • Plans: State the target career you are seeking. Where would you like to work? • Question: Ask a question to encourage two-way communication. • In what other fields can I use these skills? • Do you know of any job openings in field? • Assignment: Write out your One-minute self sell and practice it!

  9. Develop Your Network • Start with people you know…then expand! • What clubs or organizations would make sense to join for your future? • Article: Linkedin • Assignment: Create a linkedin account

  10. Conduct Networking Interviews • These are meetings with people in the field to meet your objectives. • Ie: Job Shadowing!

  11. Maintain your network • Keep your network informed on your career progress • Keep your profiles updated. Online, resume… • Thank people that have helped you along the way • Help others when you can.

  12. Negotiating • Networking will likely lead to negotiating! • Negotiating is a process in which two or more parties have something the other wants and attempt to come to an exchange agreement. • Also called bargaining • Your negotiating skills…Take the quiz!
