  1. Cold Rolled Steel Sheet

  2. What is cold rolled steel? • Metal working process to produce steel sheet • Can be cold rolled or hot rolled – only difference is how products are processed at mill • Hot rolled steel is heated above its recrystallization temperature • Finished product is smooth with a reflective surface

  3. Manufacturing process • Essentially the same has hot rolled steel, just with additional processing step • Steel is exposed to heat before it cools and is shaped • Shaping process is completed as close to room temperature as possible • Can create bars, strips, rods or sheets

  4. Cold Rolled Steel Sheet Applications • Range from simple applications to more sophisticated uses • Structural beams • Railroad tracks

  5. Applications continued • Bicycle frame tubing • Sheet metal in cars • Appliances – including washers, dryers and refrigerators • Electric motors

  6. Cold Rolled Steel Sheet Advantages • Superior surface finish as opposed to hot rolled steel sheet • Increased strength – up to 20% stronger than hot rolled steel • More precise dimensions than hot rolled steel

  7. Advantages continued • Cold rolled steel sheet doesn’t shrink so size is much more predictable • Tighter tolerances • Resistant to corrosion • Increased ductility

  8. Cold Rolled Steel Sheet Disadvantages • More difficult to shape and form • Limited to being manufactured in only a few shapes – round, square, flat, as well as variations of each • Usually costs 2x more than steel sheet that has been hot rolled • Hot rolled steel is much more malleable because of extreme temperature is heated to

  9. Where to Buy Cold Rolled Steel Sheet • JD Fields is a leading distributor of cold rolled steel sheet • 150,000 ton inventory of steel products • Offers distribution locations throughout the country as well as international shipping • Manufacturing process completed in United States and the length of steel sheet is cut to order depending on customers’ needs. • Contact us! • 55 Waugh Drive, suite 1250 Houston, Texas, United States 77077 • 281-558-7199 • jayfields@jdfields.com • http://jdfields.com/
