  2. Battle of Tannenburg August 1914 • The Belgian resistance gave the Russians time to mobilize. • The Russian army moved to Austria-Hungary and Germany from the east. • The German stopped and drove back the Russians in Tannenburg. • The Russian army was defeated.

  3. Battle of Marne September 1914 • After putting down the Belgian army, the German army moved to France. • The Germans moved 30 miles from Paris • 6,000 French troops attacked the Germans. • The German were stopped by Marne River. • This battle ended German hopes of a quick victory.

  4. Battle of Ypres October 1914 • After the German advance was stopped by the Marne River, the “Race to the Sea” began. • The German and the French armies tried to outflanked by moving north and east. • They ended up at the coast of Belgium (the city of Ypres). • A high number of casualties was the result of this battle.

  5. Dardanelles Campaign February 1915 • After the Ottoman Empire joined the war on the side of the a Central Powers. Great Britain sent ships to the Dardanelles Straits to gain a way to get supplies to Russia. • After the British landed in Gallipoli, the Ottoman Turks fought much harder than expected. • Casualties forced the British to leave the region.

  6. Battle of Verdun February 1916 • The Germans planned a siege of Verdun. • The French launched a counteroffensive to drive the German army back. • Verdun became a symbol of French resistance • Verdun was a fort taken by the German during the Franco-Prussian War

Battle of Lake Naroch March 1916 • The Russians answered the French call for help by launching an offensive in the east to lure German troops away from Verdun. • The Russians were not prepared and the Spring (muddy) conditions did not help. • Russians were defeated by the Germans (easy target).

  8. Battle of Somme July 1916 • In hopes of helping the French, the British launched an offensive against the German line near Somme. • The British ended up with more casualties and gained no land. • The tactics of war were useless (New tactics and weapons had to be developed).

  9. Battle of Caporetto October 1917 • When Italy joined the Allies in 1915, another front opened up at the Italian border (Italian v. Austria-Hungary forces). • The Germans helped Austria-Hungary to push the Italian forces to Venice. • The Central Powers were stopped when the British and French troops arrived to help.
