  2. After a costly war in France ended… • King could not afford to maintain La. • New way to fund the colony—establish a proprietorship (giving an individual a charter to operate the colony as a business)

  3. Rules: • Proprietor given almost total control • In return, had to meet requirements: -had to send supplies & settlers to colony regularly -had to follow French law

  5. New governor selected: Antoine Cadillac • Set up the Superior Council governing body • First official to suggest growing indigo and tobacco • He understood that good colonists were needed • He tried to convince Crozat to send more people to La.

  6. Cadillac • Set up a trading post that later became Detroit, Michigan • Troubles started when he refused to smoke the calumet (peace pipe) with the Indians when he visited their villages • People complained about his rude personality

  7. Superior council • Cadillac deserves credit for organizing the colony • He established the Superior Council to help govern the colony. • This council was in charge of judicial matters and was presided over by a commissioner
