    3. Class-4/Class-5 Replacement: Current Situation The replacement of core legacy C4/C5 infrastructure is happening now and through various approaches. The incumbent telcos are searching ways how to modernize and upgrade the existing circuit-switched TDM networks to multimedia IP networks. The network replacement/transformation process is very complex and requires clear concept. The replacement of narrowband access infrastructure: Is risky regarding preserving end-user experiences and services Represents the biggest cost for operators 2

High maintenance costs, legacy elements are reaching end of life, no support, experts, training or troubleshooting. Difficult implementation of new competitive services.     6. 5 The typical modernization process of carrier infrastructure Phase 1: Class4 replacement Replacing legacy PDH/SDH, ATM transport network with more economical and efficient IP/MPLS and class4 switches with NGN/IMS softswitches. No changes for the end-users. Phase 2: Class5 replacement The direct influence on the access infrastructure. Different deployment models: CO POTS AGW blades inside MSAN, POTS over BB, VoIP SIP phones, internet VoIP clients. Changes in end-user experience. Phase 3: Transition to IMS infrastructure and a partnership with Web2.0 service providers Step by step migration to IMS according to required services. Opening the network via APIs to third party web applications.

The replacement process requires a wide list of professional vendor services: Survey of the actual network state Preparation of the actual migration steps Preparation of all the necessary data for system databases migration Checking service operation after implemented migration steps etc. A cooperation with a skilled and experienced integration partner with its own product portfolio and knowledge from different telecommunications technologies and systems is strongly advised. 12
