  2. This session will enable you to: - Understand the purpose, and process of lesson observation. - Presenting and working towards a good/ outstanding lesson. -

  3. WHAT IS A LESSON OBSERVATION? WHY? Providing a fresh pair of eyes in a class to make sure that LEARNING is taking place in the lesson

  4. Main cycle of observation

  5. Observation vary in length from 20 to 60 minutes Depending on: The teacher’s previous experience as a tutor. -Action plans from earlier observation. -Feed back from your learners.

  6. Key points 1 Whether you have one hour or 20 minutes observation you should hand the following to the observer : A complete Register for the class. A Lesson Plan , and one before and after the current lesson. A Scheme of Work. An up to date Tracker for each learner. Observation Data Sheet. In your file you should have Health and Safety papers.

  7. Key Points2 The Observer will be looking for the following strategies during your lesson: Recap from last lesson. Enthusiastic and interesting teaching. Clear explanation and good link between theory & practice. Sensitivity to equal opportunity, and understanding diversitye.g disability, ethnicity.

  8. Feed Back The observer will give verbal feed back about your lesson’s management either immediately, or by phone. - Methods of teaching & LEARNING during lesson. - Assessments methods. - Feed back to students. Resources used. Paperwork in file, Class arrangement, health and safety issues, etc...

  9. Observation will not be gradedin 2013/14 Demonstrates ability to improve learning and teaching INDEPENDENTLY. -Demonstrates ability to improve learning and teaching WITH SUPPORT. -Demonstrates THE NEED for an immediate monitored action plan.

  10. Action Plan Type of Action Plan will be depends on The conclusions and recommendations of the observer’s report. Tutors are expected to implement the action plan. Managers will help in line with one of the previous three outcomes

  11. Leading to a good lesson Characteristics of good lesson: A clear link with the scheme of work. Setting of clear aim and outcomes. Good coverage of skills and knowledge indentified in S. W. Activities that are suitable for all learners. Awareness of the needs of each individual learner. Awareness of the progress of each individual in the group. Interesting and relevant use of ILT. Good quality handouts. Time management during lesson.
