Dialogue on Tools to Improve Environmental Performance • Hosted by NYSDEC – November 20, 2002 • Brought together about 70 experts in environmental management to discuss innovative environmental management tools and how they can most effectively be applied • Information available at: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/ppu/dialmain.html

Dialogue on Tools to Improve Environmental Performance • Outcomes relevant to EMS programs: • Incorporate multiple tools in a comprehensive and systematic manner • Information on performance is key • Programs need to be credible • Tiered approaches can lead to more strategic environmental management • Engage leadership

EMS in NYS: Past Two Years • Developed EMS Guidance: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/ppu/p2ems.html • EMS training for DEC staff • EMS/enforcement pilot – NYS Correctional Facility • EMS Assistance/Outreach at targeted sectors and as requested • EPA Performance Track Basically, we learned from these activities

EMS in NYS: The Future • Development of a DEC EMS Policy – will serve three purposes • Statement of support for the EMS concept – encourage programs to find ways to utilize them • Provide authority to the Pollution Prevention Unit to develop an incentive based EMS program • Provide authority to the Division of Environmental Enforcement to utilize EMSs in enforcement programs
