  1. Contentment Saying in Jamaica Patois dialect: “Tech wehyu get till yu get wehyuwaan” Translation: Take whatever you get until you get what you want Meaning: Be satisfied with the little you have until you receive all that you desire

  2. The Meaning of “Contentment” • “To be mentally or emotionally satisfied with things as they are” • “Assenting to or willing to accept circumstances, a proposed course of action, etc.” • Many are no better than Pagans who worry about things of the world (cf. Matt. 6:33) • Discontent – manifested by “keeping up with the Jones,” etc. • Discontent is a symptom of a lack of trust in God

  3. Introduction • Many in America are not content – We want more and more… • We live in a consumer society – Advertising urges us to obtain the newest and the best • Our closets are full – We own the latest cars, gadgets, etc. • With our affluent lifestyle, even the poor among us could, like David, say: “My cup runs over” (Psa. 23:5)

  4. “The Poor” should learn Contentment • Even the “poor” in our society are wealthy beyond the dreams of billions of people who live in “the third world.” • Those having a roof over their head and a meal on the table are richer than 93% of the world’s population • To have shoes is to be richer than 75% of world’s population • In U.S. credit card debt averages more than $16,000 per household • Solomon said: “He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase” (Eccl. 5:11)

  5. Contentment does not trust in riches Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt. 6:19-21, niv). Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” So we may boldly say, “the lord is my helper what man can do to me” (Heb. 13:6)

  6. Meet Sandra Green and her children

  7. Her Humble Abode • Composed of scraps of wood, tin, and printing plates

  8. A Sign on the Wall of her House… • Powerful Message On the wall … “Thank you LORD My Needs are Met… Healing is mine. Hallelujah, Thank You Jesus”

  9. How to be content with so little • “It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in men” (Psa. 118:8) • Sandra Green trusted in the Lord, not her own understanding (Prov. 3:5) • Abraham trusted God when told to offer Isaac: “God Himself will provide…” (Gen. 22:8). He didn’t know how, but he trusted Him • “To this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, specially of those who believe” (1 Tim. 4:10)

  10. There is Peace in Contentment “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and covering, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (I Tim. 6:6-10, niv).

  11. Paul Learned Contentment “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to be abased, and I abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens” (Phil. 4:11-13) • Written from Roman Prison, thanking Philippians for sending to supply his needs • Views their giving as more important than his receiving!

  12. “Trust and Obey” • “He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need” (Eph. 4:28). • Some early Christians sold their possessions in order to give to the needy among them (Acts 4:32-35) • Contrast the actions of Barnabas and Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 4:26-27; 5:1-10) • The King will say: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matt. 25:40)

  13. All Should Learn to be Content Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Heb. 13:5-6) • Many are not content with their conditions – always striving for more money, power, prestige, etc. • We should be satisfied with our situation – much or little • Trust God to provide what is best for us – “All things work together for good to those who love God…” (Rom. 8:28)

  14. Something to Consider: Are you putting your faith and trust in the Lord? Some people seem to trust God with their eternal salvation, but they have trouble trusting Him for their every-day life. If we can trust God to fulfill His promises, can He trust us to meet the required conditions? Take comfort from these words of scripture. You can trust God with your needs today!
