Amos 1:1-2:3 The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. (2)And he said, Jehovah will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the pastures of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither. (3)Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Damascus, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron: The Judgment of NationsAmos 1:1-2:3

  21. (4)but I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad. (5)And I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith Jehovah. (6) Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Gaza, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole people, to deliver them up to Edom: (7)but I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. (8)And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon;

  22. …and I will turn my hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord Jehovah. (9) Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Tyre, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole people to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant: (10)but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. (11)Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever: (12) but I will send a fire upon Teman, and it shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

  23. (13)Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they may enlarge their border. (14) But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind; (15)and their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith Jehovah.

  24. (2:1) Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Moab, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime: (2)but I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet; (3)and I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith Jehovah.

  25. The Judgment of NationsAmos 1:1-2:3 2 Kings 10:32-33 In those days Jehovah began to cut off from Israel: and Hazael smote them in all the borders of Israel; (33) from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan. 27. (3)But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the children of Israel. (4)And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. (5) Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him. (6)At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drove the Jews from Elath; and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there, unto this day.

  28. (7)So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, who rise up against me. (8)And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king's house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria. (9)And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him; and the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.

  33. Ezekiel 26:7-14For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will bring upon TyreNebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and a company, and much people. (8)He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field; and he shall make forts against thee, and cast up a mound against thee, and raise up the buckler against thee. (9)And he shall set his battering engines against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.

  34. (10)By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wagons, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach. (11)With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all thy streets; he shall slay thy people with the sword; and the pillars of thy strength shall go down to the ground. (12)And they shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise; and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses; and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the waters.

  35. (13)And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard. (14)And I will make thee a bare rock; thou shalt be a place for the spreading of nets; thou shalt be built no more: for I Jehovah have spoken it, saith the Lord Jehovah.

  36. The Judgment of NationsAmos 1:1-2:3 • Edom • Bitter enemies of Israel, especially when Jerusalem was besieged by Chaldeans • Ammon • Killed pregnant women to seize territory in Gilead • Moab • Burned the bones of the king of Edom

  37. The Judgment of JudahAmos 2:4-5 Amos 2:4-5 Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Judah, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have rejected the law of Jehovah, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers did walk: (5)but I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

  38. The Judgment of JudahAmos 2:4-5 Transgressions: Despised the law of the Lord Kept not His commandments Lies (false prophets) caused them to sin (err) Judgment: Fire will come upon them and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem Fall of Jerusalem (2 Kings 25)

  39. The Judgment of IsraelAmos 2:6-16 Amos 2:6-16 Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes - (7)they that pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father go unto the same maiden, to profane my holy name: (8) and they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge; and in the house of their God they drink the wine of such as have been fined.

  40. (9)Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath. (10)Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. (11)And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith Jehovah. (12)But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not. (13)Behold, I will press you in your place, as a cart presseth that is full of sheaves.

  41. (14)And flight shall perish from the swift; and the strong shall not strengthen his force; neither shall the mighty deliver himself; (15) neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself; neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself; (16)and he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith Jehovah.

  42. The Judgment of IsraelAmos 2:6-16 • Transgressions: • The leaders sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes • Panted after (wanted it badly) the dust of the earth on the head of the poor • Turned aside the way of the meek • A man and son with the same woman • Retained pledged garments and used them in holy places • Bought wine with unjust and oppressive fines

  43. The Judgment of IsraelAmos 2:6-16 • Transgressions: • Caused God’s chosen ones to break their vow and stumble • Commanded the prophets not to prophesy • Judgment: • God’s judgment to them would be utter destruction • None would escape, not even the strongest, the fastest, or the most courageous

  44. The JudgmentsAmos 2:6-16 • Notes: • All judgments came about within 50 years of these prophesies • Judgments of the nations were for their wickedness against God’s people • Judgments against Judah and Israel were for transgressions against the people and for transgressing God’s commandments • Destruction will be total and complete, except for a remnant

  45. Five Visions of AmosAmos 7:1 – 9:10 Amos 7:1-3 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. (2)And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. (3) The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD. • Vision of grasshoppers (7:1-3)

  46. Five Visions of AmosAmos 7:1 – 9:10 Amos 7:4-7 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. (5)Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. (6) The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD. (7)Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. Vision concerning the fire (7:4-7)

  47. Five Visions of AmosAmos 7:1 – 9:10 Amos 7:7-9 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. (8)And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: (9)And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. Vision of the plumbline (7:7-9)

  48. Five Visions of AmosAmos 7:1 – 9:10 4. Amaziah, the priest, falsely accused Amos before Jeroboam (7:10-17) • Amos declared that God had sent him and the pronounced doom on the false priest

  49. Amos 7:10-17 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. (11)For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. (12)Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: (13)But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court. (14)Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit.

  50. (15) And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. (16) Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac. (17) Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
