  1. Mystery Class Project Ms. Alexander’s Class 2011 - 2012

  2. About the Project Somewhere on the earth there are ten mystery classes hiding. It’s your job to find them!

  3. Sunrise and Sunset Data Using weekly sunrise and sunset data clues we made line graphs to help chart the photoperiods of each mystery class. We then compared them to our photoperiod to help us narrow our search.

  4. Clues After eight weeks we started receiving clues. Some sure were hard! We had to do a lot of research to find the answers! "Some of the world's highest mountains are on our continent."

  5. Meet our Teams Each team worked really hard on the project. Here’s what they had to say about what they learned and about their mystery class.

  6. Team #1Rabat, Morocco Jamie, Minna, Alex B.

  7. What We’ve Learned • Longitude ( north to south) and latitude (east to west). • Military time (24 hours on the clock instead of 12) ex: 18:24. • How to do line graphs.

  8. About our Mystery Class • They are in the second grade. • Their school mascot is a lion. • Rabat, the capital city, is ¼ of it’s region’s name (Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer). Our Mystery Class This is a Kasbah, or fort.

  10. What We’ve Learned • We learned a new way to solve elapsed time. • We learned about photoperiod (how long the sun is up). • We learned how to make line graphs.

  11. About our Mystery Class • The Basotho Hat Shop, one of the landmarks in Maseru, Lesotho is on their flag. • They are in the 5th grade at the AISL, or American International School of Lesotho. • Their school is in a residential area near a golf course, instead of in the city.

  13. What We Learned We learned about Military time. We learned about latitude and longitude. We learned how to count time zones. We learned about the seven continents. We learned about the Hemispheres.

  14. Their school About our Mystery Class Our class is in Vientiane, Laos. Our class likes sports and chicken. Our class lives in the most heavily bombed country, and some of the bombs haven't even gone off yet. Our class does a lot of after school activates like martial arts, soccer, gymnastics, outdoor sports, and many, many, many more. Our class likes to eat sticky rice that is cooked over night in a basket. This is one of there countries biggest places to worship. Plus its made of gold.

  17. We have learned… Facts Our Graph • We have learned you can’t just go with the first answer you have. • We have learned how to factor photoperiods. • We learned how to make a line graph. • We learned about longitude and latitude.

  18. Mystery Class #4 They have pi day. Their flag has a sun on it. Uruguay is bordered by Brazil and Argentina. They speak Spanish.

  20. What We Learned • We learned about Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which is the time in Greenwich. (It is also referred to as Universal Time.) • We learned about photoperiod, which is the time between when the sun is up and when it sets. • We learned about latitude and longitude, which are coordinates where a place is located.

  21. Our mystery class • In Sheffield they have two football (or soccer) teams. One nicknamed the Blades (or Sheffield United) and the other nicknamed the owls (or Sheffield Wednesday.) • In Sheffield the Coordinates are 53.38N and 1.47W. ( North is longitude and west is latitude.) • In Sheffield they eat a dish called Yorkshire Pudding, but don’t be fooled by its name, this is not a pudding but it is a dish usually served with roast beef and vegetables.

  23. What We Learned • We learned about latitude (horizontal imaginary lines) and longitude (vertical imaginary lines). • We learned about military time, it’s time in 24-hour format. • We learned about photoperiod the hours and minutes of sunlight in a day.

  24. Our Mystery Class • We are located outside the Antarctic circle, thought we are on Antarctica their station is owned by Australia. • They have a supermarket called “Woolies” and everything is FREE! • Our mystery class is located near 5 major peninsula in the Windmill Islands.

  26. What We Now Know • We learned how to make a line graph. • We learned what universal time is. • We learned the different types of websites: .com, .gov, .mil, .edu

  27. Things about Mystery Class #7 • Their school has many different cultures and languages. • They have “tall sands” (Marina Bay Hotel) • Singapore is names from “singapura” which means “lion city.”

  29. What we learned • We learned that you can factor time. • We now know how to use line graphs. • We learned about Military Time. • We learned how to use the internet properly.

  30. Welcome to Blantyre, Malawi • They just won the Football Tournament against all other teams in Malawi. • They have lots Vervet Monkeys around the school. • They eat Nsima with relish for most meals. • They are learning about Ancient Egyptians in their class.

  31. Team Number NinePalampur, India Lilly Martin and Robert Thomason

What we Learned • We learned multiple things about longitude and latitude. • We learned how to factor photoperiod (the time in between the sunrise and sunset, or how many hours of daylight in an area). • We learned about the geography of Asia. • We learned about the history and culture of Palampur, India.

  33. Our Mystery Class • Our mystery class lives in the tea capitol of India. • They live in the Himalayan mountain range. • Dancing is a large part of their culture.

  35. What We’ve Learned • We learned about photoperiods(the amount of time the sun is up). • We’ve learned about latitude and longitude. • We’ve learned how to do elapsed time.

  36. Our Mystery Class • Our class is in a one room school house. • There are 11 kids in the school/class. • One of the kids plays the ukulele. • Their school recently added a computer room.

  37. We did it! Our Class was one of the finalist in the project! We were so excited!
